CT turkey season open...
« on: April 26, 2017, 10:42:00 AM »
Any CT guys get out in the rain today?
I slept in, not a 'fan' of hunting in the rain. Maybe tomorrow if weather clears.

0/1 here. My bow mounted decoy is a bit awkward to carry and call with, but I could dance behind it without a problem.
Didn't get up until 0630. In the woods in about a half hour. Birds were gobbling when I got out of truck.
Headed down the cart path with ghillie on and bow in hand. In the neighbor's yard I see a head and top of another's fan.
I wait until the head goes down and boogie down the trail. Get set up and call a little. Wait, wait, wait....occasionally hearing a distant gobble.
I check the other neighbor's field that the cart path skirts, there's a hen, but, no toms.
Back to the trail, I wait just a few minutes and stand up to look further down the path...a head, then two. I slowly drop down and have bow in front of me.
Four jakes come around the corner quietly. They gobble after seeing my dekes, but don't fan out. Standing at 18 yards or so, I contemplate a shot. I want them to come in just a few more yards.
No deal, they try to skirt around me, between the path and the field wall. At 12-13 yards, I pick a bird, draw, wait for it to step in an opening, release.
There were a few sapling pines in the way, and I'm sure I hit one. My arrow didn't seem to fly as straight as it should have, and stuck in the ground at his feet.
Into the field they went, but hung around for a quite a bit. Good morning, had fun. At 0910 a doe came out of the field and crossed in front of me. I headed out.

Finally got back out for a second hunt this morning. Only had until 8:30, so I was in the woods at 5:45. Talked to a couple birds that sounded like they were across the road. Every time they got talking, a school bus or truck would go by and they would shut up for 20 minutes. Around 7:50 I moved down the trail a bit and sat on a rock and called. Wearing my ghillie suit, I heard flapping of a little bird. It landed on the rock next to me. Then I felt it land on my back and work it's way up to my head. Pecking at the jute fibers I guess. Was pretty cool.
On the way out, I scanned the neighbor's field hoping to see a bird to call to. Bam, there it was and it spotted me first. Nice longbeard. I tried to set up and call, but when I peeked back into field, he was nowhere to be seen. Oh well, only had a couple minutes left anyway. Maybe tomorrow.

I'm in NE corner, about as far from Fairfield as you can get and still be in CT.

Haven't been getting out much, between work and just too lazy to get out of bed.

But, I hit the woods around 7am today. At 8:10 or so, a nice longbeard circled around into the neighbor's field. He came right up to the stone wall, but wouldn't hop over. If he had, the potential shot would've been around 12 yards. He saw something he didn't like and putted off, not running, but a steady pace.

Went further into the woods on a ridge and bumped a hen. Called and she responded, but no toms.
I circled back around to the original spot and heard some gobbles. Ended up calling in 4, maybe 5 jakes and a hen. One jake was interested in my dekes, but again, he wouldn't commit and jump the wall. Another nice morning playing with the birds. Out at 10:30.

Any of you CT guys hunting?
