Wood Arrows ! Cool!
« on: May 04, 2017, 10:06:00 AM »
My first shots with wood arrows and I'm impressed. I just received 3 test arrows from Paul @ Elite Arrows. I shot the last night and will paper tune Saturday. Three different spines, three different weights and they group as well as my "tuned" carbons. The Shelton I'm shooting is very quiet but with these arrows it goes into "stealth mode".  This is going to make this a lot more fun. Nothing like a nice wood arrow streaking towards fur or feather. Thanks for the guidance guys.

That Shelton just "wants" wood arrows by it's design.  Glad you found the simplistic joy in them.

I have found that several of my Hill style bows will shoot arrows well over a range of spines. All I shoot are wood arrows, so I don't know if they are that accommodating to aluminum or carbon. I used to shoot aluminum but found it much easier to make the bow quieter with wood.

I tried aluminum briefly in the early 1980's but have been and remain a wood shaft shooter.

Mostly because I was too lazy to try and figure out anything else.

For most guys, wood seem to be either magic, or a mess.  You just have to find the right combination.
I have two testers that I got from RMS.  The shoot like a dream from my Border Covert Hunter.
I don't know if I will buy more and hunt with them but for now I do enjoy shooting them with my carbons and aluminums.

Wood arrows, non-metal bows, instinctive shooting, hunting, personal challenge, respect for the means more so than obsession with killing or winning something...are all keys to the unwritten Constitution of Traditional Archery (which has become more than a little 'dusty' over the last decade or two).  Depending on your mindset (another key), you can find more reward in archery by following these guideposts than by any chase-for-glory that modern target archery might tempt you with.  The reward is rich if you refuse to bite the apple.

Welcome to one of the 'tastes' of real traditional archery.

Love to use wood too....just got a new doz premium shafts from Surewood!  I've used cedar, birch, hop hornbeam, ash, and Douglas. Love making them up with painting, cresting, fletching, etc.   They kill deer real good...have shot pass throughs before that I had to cut the arrow out of the tree behind the deer afterward.  Love the look of them too in the quiver.  My hunting partner has started to foot some cedar...those are some beautiful crafted arrows.

I just recently purchased a spine tester and was amazed to see that my Predator recurve shoots wood arrows that differ as much as 8 pounds of spine.  I have only shot them out to 30 yards or so, but when I do my part, they all fly great and group together.  Wood arrows are very forgiving, in my experience.
