Stiff Arrows to Weak Arrows?
« on: May 08, 2017, 01:52:00 PM »
I accidently ordered 350 Black Eagle Outlaws on ny Amazon app. Rather than go through the hastle of shipping them back, could I just put an insert and large broadhead on them to make them weaker to shoot on my 45# recurve? They are 32" and I draw a 50# recurve to 26". I was thinking of getting 100 grain brass inserts, 150 grain broad heads, and leaving the arrows at 32".

What do you guys think?

There are more factors of spine needed than just the bow weight.

For my guess, No, you wont.  Especial with a 26" draw.  I shoot some .350 spined arrows out of my #52@29" centaur, but I draw nearly 30" and that's with 240 grains up front.

Some times you can get what I call "perfectly stiff" and it will work out if you're there.  Best bet would be to ship it back and get some .500's.  If you bought them from Randy, he will for sure treat you right!

I would get the correct arrows - at what you recommended you'll have a full 6" of shaft and another couple of inches of broadhead sticking out when at draw.  For me, that would really wreak havoc on my sight picture.  I've never had great success in trying to make very stiff shafts become weak enough... but that's just me.

Glad it worked out.  But in case it happens again, it may help to know that I have a similar setup -- GT 340s uncut at 32" with 300 grains up front out of a 50# recurve, fast flight string, drawn to a little under 27".  It's slow with a point-on at about 22 yards.  But it flies straight bare or fletched.  The same arrow off of my 45# limbs is stiffer and slower but not by much.  Besides, a heavy arrow is harder to stop at any speed.  If you're into 3D, it would be silly to have this setup.  But for backyard & hunting, I love it.
