Black widow recurve stipple grip?
« on: May 26, 2017, 08:10:00 AM »
Has anyone ever done or had done a stipple grip or checkering on their black widow? I have a PSA that currently has the standard factory grip and I'd love to do something with it. I like the look and feel of wood so I don't want to go the route of a beaver tail wrap or anything on this particular bow  but think I would like the look and feel of a stipple grip kind of like I've seen on some of the blacktail bows and a few others.
Does anyone have any pictures of this being done to a widow recurve or know a bowyer or similar craftsman that does that? Thanks much!

I've seen a few that Dave Windauer has checkered. They look great. That's what I would do.

I just did my bear grizzly myself.  I used a dremel.  I also added a coyote print to it because I'm a trapper and also when hunting I'm an opportunist like the coyote.  Not sure I can post pics but if someone wants to post them for me I could email them.
It's not too hard - do it yourself- become one with your bow.

Might want to keep resale in mind.  Checkering might enhance resale.  Stippling doesn't, IMO.

I don't know Dave is he a Bowyer? You have any pics Keith? I think what I mean is the checkering kinda like the grip on a wood gun stock, I wasn't sure what it was called. I considered learning the process to do myself but would be very sad if I messed it up.The bow was my dads he gave to me as a gift and I shoot it better than any bow I've ever shot, it means a lot to me and I'll never get rid of it, intend on passing it down to my boys so would be great to do some kind of cool grip, I'll prob eventually skin the limbs too.

Dave is to checkering on bow handles as Michelangelo was to painting ceilings.  He took over Schafer bows from Paul Schafer some years ago, and has been doing fine as a bowyer ever since.

This is a Dave Windauer checkered Black Widow, he also checkered my Tall Tines and did the checker and carving on my Silvertip.

Checkering by Dave is great!

(If stippling the only man I'd have do it is Jim Neaves at Centaur.  He's the best at it.)
