Bear vintage tape on quiver modification build along-St. Judes

I was the winning bidder on a vintage 4 arrow Bear tape on bow quiver.  I did an article a few years ago for TradArchers World on this conversion, however I just acquired a John McCullough 59'r recurve and thought a vintage quiver would be great with this bow. So for those that didn't see the article before, here's the picture version:

Shopping list:
Sandpaper
Epoxy (or similar metal to metal glue)
2 Great Northern quiver replacement straps
2 shelf brackets for cabinets (got mine at home depot)
Also, depending on the condition of the quiver, you can get a replacement "original" rubber tip holder for up inside the quiver hood and shaft gripper from 3 Rivers Archery. I usually replace the gripper with the one from 3 Rivers because it's a softer rubber and is quieter and doesn't harden in the cold like the original.

The above photo shows the original and flattened out bracket.  Rough up the two gluing surfaces with sandpaper, glue and use tape to hold in place until dry.

However, before doing that, check the alignment of the brackets with the curves of your bow. In the below picture you can see it's offset by a little, so take a pair of pliers and gently bend so that the arm is at the same angle as the attachment point on the bow.

 

Remove the leather patches from the limb if they're still in place, they just absorb water and the rubber from the straps will protect the finish of the bow from the attachment point.

For the hood, here's what the original point holder looks like:

So for this portion I do two things.  First I used 5 minute epoxy on all the metal to metal connection points, including where the support arms runs inside the hood and where the sheet metal overlaps on the outside. The goal is to make these points vibration free by making them solid connections. Also, I take replacement hood foam (any of the quiver companies will work) and cut to fit tightly up inside the hood. Use contact cement to place after testing fit. By stuffing it in tightly, we're creating better soundproofing of the hood and a more solid point hold. It's not period correct, but it's more functional.

I put some pitch blend conditioner on the fourth arrow holder on outside of quiver. Next up is attaching to bow and you're ready to use your modified vintage quiver.  Thank you donors for the St. Jude's Auction!

That's a fantastic way to update a great quiver! I always liked the spot for that court arrow. Nock that one first and the other three are still well balanced. It's lil having a three or flu arrow quiver all in one!

Thanks Andy. It really is a great quiver with the modifications.  The knock on some of these older Bear quivers was the noise from vibrations. This quiver is dead quiet on my bow. As mentioned, gluing down all the potential loose connections is step one. also, the rubber strap wrapping around the tape arm holds the quiver up off the bow so there's no vibrating of the metal arm against the bow on release (and protects the finish of the bow). That's why it's important to bend the arm to the contour of the bow so only the rubber strap touches. If it's a difficult contour, just use the excess strap cut off under the arm(it'll hold in place with the pressure of the wrapped rubber)similar to what Bear did with the leather strips shown in the picture.
