Do I need to cut my arrows?
« on: July 20, 2017, 02:24:00 PM »
I have a 27 draw length and I'm using 600 spine gold tip warrior arrows for my 35# bow. Do I need to cut them or leave them full length? What's the advantage or disadvantage of either? Thanks

Are they showing weak spine? Cutting the length stiffens the spine. I only cut arrows to get the proper tune. Unless you are trying to use the length for sighting purposes. Instinctive styles are not affected so much by arrow length. I do like plenty of clearance for broadheads however. Usually about 2".

Agree with elkhunter.  Carbons can be very touchy with a quarter of an inch removed greatly impacting spine.  If your form and release are good you may want to bareshaft them at full length and see if they show weak...  Nothing wrong with a full length arrow especially if you're a gap shooter.  Not knowing much about your bow other than weight i would guess 600s may be a little stiff, but tuning will tell.

I prefer to cut as a last resort and tune with point weight, if nothing else to protect their resale value. If you got down to 100-125 gr. range and they're still noticeably weak, you might not have any other option, but I'd guess your choice of spine should tune easily with that set-up.

Only some sort of tuning will tell you whether you need to change the length of your arrow.  That is the only thing that should make a person alter shaft length! If you feel you have too much shaft in front of the bow at full draw, then you need to go to a weaker shaft, or more front end weight to get the shaft shorter. In the end, proper tuning should be the only determinant of proper shaft length!!!

I shoot wood and just prefer a longer shaft. I only pull 25" but like 29" arrows, which just happen to tune up well with my bows. I agree with those who say cutting is only required as a tuning mechanism.

Agree with everyone above - I have tuned a few bows going into with a set arrow length I wanted to shoot.  I was able to work it out, but only because I had a lot of arrow options to work from in my stock already.

Otherwise - as they have all said, tune the arrow to the bow and the let the bow tell you what works.  If full length is what tunes, then so be it.  Carbons are very sensitive to shortening...it can change spine drastically.  So much so, that when I tune carbons I cut them in 1/4" increments.  It's tedious, but works better for me.

I use FULL length gt trads 600 with my 27 inch draw with 45@28 recurve (42 at 27) so I would leave them full until your form improves then tune to length and tip weight.
here's some tuning tips:( but get your form down before you try to tune)
