More dreaming of November
« on: July 20, 2017, 08:09:00 PM »
It'll be here before we know it guys! November is absolutely my favorite time of the year for obvious reasons minus the gun hunting days of course. I got my work done early this year and now have 28 stands in place. Most won't get hunted due to various factors such as the right circumstances coming together. All of these stands are on heavily hunted land that also get gun "hunted". The majority of my time is spent hunting near my home on very tiny wood lots with a sea of corn and beans surrounding them and then typically for 10 days in November I will hunt a farm 4 hours away that is large but also gets gun hunted hard. That's the breaks these days it seems and I'm sure you guys can all relate. Still, when I hunt hard during November I'll increase my chances at a nice buck and will greatly increase my quality of life just by being out there in November with my Habu bow in hand!
I spent many days scouting in Feb/March and tweaked a number of stands and cannot wait until I get to try them out. I have learned over the years that most stand setups are only good for two or maybe three sits per season. After that the deer are on to you. Because of this I also keep a lightweight lone wolf portable at my disposal in case I see a situation develop and need to get in there "right now"! In fact, I killed 2 deer last season and despite having many preset stands to choose from I killed them both out of my lone wolf stand on a "run and gun" type hunt when I was fortunate enough to recognize what was happening and where I needed to be! My buck was a nice 5x5 around probably around 140" gross and at 6 yards even I could not miss. I also saw him 2 days before I killed him. Moved into the area well ahead of daylight with a stand and sticks on my back, setup and got him that morning. More of that please! Good luck out there guys!

28 stands... holy cow!!! I don't know that I've hung many more than that in all my years of hunting. You are one dedicated hunter - hope your pick of stands and timing equate to a very nice deer!
Either way, good for you on your dedication & appreciation of the hunt -before, during, and after the season...

Feeling the same here, Jon!
Biggest change for me will be the fact that the 2,000+ trees I planted 15 years ago are just getting big enough that deer are using them as a regular travel way. Actually, I'm a year late. Had I been more on the ball last year and realized what was happening I could have had some quality hunting literally in my back yard. This year I will be there! None of the trees are even close to big enough for a stand, but ground blinds will blend right in. Dreaming of November...

28 stands is pretty impressive! I've got about that many spots but pack in and out most times. I'm planning to hunt more from the ground this year as I really enjoyed doing it last year and on public land it's a lot easier
Best of luck!! Please post pictures so we can share in the memories
