Mackinaw vest recommendations?
« on: July 28, 2017, 09:19:00 PM »
I'm looking for a really nice, high quality, mackinaw vest.  I live in Arkansas and want it to be comfortable from mid 50's thru mid 30's or under another light jacket when below the 30's.

I'm 5'11 and about 160lbs and I'd like the fit to be fairly athletic cut and true to size with just a little extra girth and enough length to keep my pockets covered when standing and keep from riding up when sitting.  I want room to move in it but do NOT want it to be baggy or loose.

As for design I want either buttons or a zipper up front, good roomy hand warmer pockets, and a few extra small pockets up front or flatter cargos that can expand a little when stuffed up front would be good.  A slip pocket in the rear for small game wouldn't be bad ether as I'm an avid squirrel hunter.

This garment MUST be easy to launder and MUST be quiet in the woods.  I'm thinking for a material polyester fleece would be ideal but wool would be a second option if it was not too finicky of a blend.

As for colors, I'm thinking OD green, medium grey, or a medium brown solid would be fine.  I might do a plaid or a print if it were not too bold.  I work as an occupational therapist and would want to be able to wear it to work and the woods.  Jeans and a polo is adequate attire for where I work so anything that's just a little nicer than casual attire is fine for me at work.

What's the ideal products out there to meet these needs?

This sucker is going to need a good cleaning 1-2x a week for fall, winter, and early spring. It'll be a frequent flyer. Something that can just be tossed in the wash sounds MUCH more likely to be actually used, which is the main reason I'm leaning more towards a polyester fleece. Wool is great but harder to maintain and clean.

I love my filson vest, I wash it just don't put it in the dryer, it will shrink. I'm your height but 25lbs heavier and I wear a large and it fits perfect. You can't beat their quality as long as you don't pack on the pounds you could probably wear one the rest of your life.

If for some reason, I lost all my hunting clothes, the first thing I would buy to replace them would be a filson vest.  They just seem to be made for bow hunting.  They are nearly indestructible and I just wash mine in warm water by hand and have never had a problem.

Filson, no question.
The years accumulate on old friendships like tree rings, during which time a kind of unspoken care and loyalty accrue between men.

Filson is a little pricey. However, the quality is top shelf. I own hats, vests and bags from Filson. I would definitely buy them again.

Add me to the Filson crew.   No need to wash it frequently at all.

I have had both a Filson and a King of the Mountain uninsulated wool vest for many years. One is dark plaid, the other is camo.

I like them both and although usually just airing them outside is sufficient, when necessary I wash them both by machine (gentle) but dry them "naturally".

The Filson seems to be a bit tighter weave as it is a little more wind resistant.

That and the fact that the Filson is also slightly thicker (and thus slightly warmer) makes it a little stiffer - which is really not an issue.

I do find though that the pockets on the Filson are a little shallow - which again is not really an issue depending on what layer you wear it as.

I have had 4 Filson and 3 K.O.M. items for a long time and will have them the rest of my life... but then, I'm 64, LOL!

For spring bear hunting I use a thinner green plaid "dressy" wool vest I found on sale in a boutique that my wife and I just happened to be going by several years ago in a larger town.

When I'm out of shape and don't wear a hat it  makes me look like Winston Churchill, LOL!
May your next adventure lighten your heart, test your spirit, and nourish your soul.

Love my Filson vest.  And just saying wool doesn't need washing like other materials and as stated above, if you do wash it, just don't throw it in the dryer, and use your gentle cycle.
