Self bow brace height
« on: August 31, 2017, 08:42:00 PM »
I'm about to order a string for a 69 7/8" Osage selfbow. With the current 63" string I'm about to replace, my brace height is 6 7/8". does this seem above or below normal?

That's about right for a self bow.  You don't want to brace a self bow any higher than necessary for the feathers to clear the string and good arrow flight.  The higher the brace height, the more stress it puts on the limbs.  I try to go no higher than 7".

I set all of mine at my fistmele which happens to be 6 3/8". Real easy to check, put the heel of my hand on the handle, stretch out my thumb and I have my measurement.

For a bow that's almost 70" that string length is very short.  Should be about 67 or so.

I prefer to a brace height around 6 3/4".  However, the brace height where the bow has the least amount of handshock determines the BH I use on a particular bow.  Bow design, tiller, and ones release, all affect the amount of handshock and what height the sweet spot is found.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.
