Who converts a 1 pc to a fibre glasse 2pc?
« on: September 08, 2017, 01:17:00 PM »
Make a desperate man happy    ;)

I have seen the perfect bow for me (66" recurve), but it only comes as one piece.

I would like a fibre glass(as Big Jim does) locket-socket conversion.

Is there any bowyer who offers this?

It has an I-beam riser, if that helps?

Cheers
Alex

I had the same issue for some bows I glued up 15 years ago. Shoot great but not easy to travel with. Met Shane Unhro of Great Plains at Denton. He does a bow sleeve. Not exactly what you are looking for but.. if the bow has straight lines to work off of he can sleeve it. Sent him two bows. They came back tonight and look great. Sleeve is tight and he refinished them.  Everything is aligned and they look way better than when I shipped them.
Might be an option for you.

Regards,
Andy

Thank you both...

What is a bow sleeve? Is it the metal version of the locket socket?

The bow in question is:   https://scontent-frt3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/21272452_1588471067879992_6205079238276973905_n.jpg?oh=b50abe5480a3e7373c77bad2a001d3c9&oe=5A4D36BD

I don't know if that is straight enough for a bow sleeve...

That is a really nice looking bow!!!!  Who makes it?

I tried several times to find a bowyer to make a longbow I have into a 2 pc system and I never found one.

Well, I was being a bit coy, because I am not sure if I am allowed to say, since I don't think he is a sponsor here...

However, it is a Thunderbird by Ray St Charles bow and is based on the fomr of his Father's from the 50's...

You know, converting that bow into a two piece bow is not going to be cheap, and there is always the risk that you're not going to like the result, since this type of conversion is not commonly done.

I wouldn't have made this post before I saw the photo of the bow, but it is so beautiful, I would want to keep it that way.

Find a used two or three piece bow, hopefully with a few dings already in it that will reduce the cost and the pain when you get dings of your own in the future.  Subtract the cost you will save by not remodeling your bow, and the used bow will turn out to be a bargain.

Even though the bow has a laminated riser, I don't believe it can be made into a socket type take down like Big Jim's or Blackwidow's.  Big Jim recommends using phenolic in the riser when using his socket system.  My experience supports his recommendation.
The broadhead used, regardless of how sharp, is nowhere as important as being able to place it in the correct spot.

I would talk to Ray St. Charles and see what he thinks. They do many sleeve T.Ds In  their longbows.which is a  metal/brass slide in design.I have had many bows with this system by various bowyers. But I have never had a 1 piece converted to a 2 PC.

Nice bow!I had a 63 inch one many moons ago

I have contacted him on facebook, but he has not answered.  Maybe I should call him and he will take me more seriously.

If not I have found  66" old style recurve called Stotler Medalist and it can be had as a takedown.  Alas a 3 piece, but it doesn't look like one...  https://thumbs.worthpoint.com/zoom/images2/1/0711/14/lh-stotler-recurve-bow_1_6cca671349c59c08184b75b9444d985f.jpg

Heard too many horror stories. on't do it. Two piece bows need to be built like that from the start. Most boaters won't even try.

Hi Bill,

I don't have the bow yet.  I wanted to find out exactly how the riser should be made first (according to the person who will convert it) and then ask Ray St Charles to make it that way.

I thought this would be the safest way...

Cheers
