Can anyone explain the Florida WMA system?
« on: September 21, 2017, 02:18:00 PM »
We're looking to retire near the Apopka/Orlando area in a few years. I'm trying to figure out the public land situation, specifically areas like the Ocala National Forest and the Withlacoochee National Forest. There's several other WMA's as well in the area but I'm looking for info on how these work? Specifically, what's up with the Quota hunting? Can you just get a hunting license and hunt in the National Forests (assuming all laws/seasons are followed, etc) or is this like a lottery or something? Thanks in advance. Just trying to do all the information gathering I can early on.

Been awhile since I've hunted down there on Jumper Creek WMA but the way I remember it was that they had quota hunts set up for certain dates and then during the other times it was open for that particular weapon. Obviously try to get on a quota hunt since it would be less crowded. Always check out the WMA brochure since sometimes hog hunting was open during other season like small game.

Florida has some awesome public lands.  Add in the ocean and you have a sportsman or woman's paradise!!  Just invest in a Thermacell LOL.

Each WMA has a brochure that goes with it and unique rules/seasons.  Some are open and some require a quota permit that is awarded by lottery.   You apply for quota permits around June.
