Modern quivers...big traditional heads???
« on: October 14, 2017, 05:57:00 PM »
I know it's a little gadgety. But I like having a modern quiver on my das dx5.

I currently have an apex gear quiver on there. The thing I like about this quiver is the dual sets of grippers and no foam in the hood. I've carried broadheads all season and they are just as sharp as when I put them in at the beginning. With my thunderhorn I needed to check the sharpness of the head when I pull it (same with any quiver that uses foam). And may have to resharpen every 3-4 hunts. And back quivers are even worse.

My problem is that the hood is just too small for the big nasties.

Cutthroats are ok. Zephyr sasquatches take up a lot of space, and a tiny bit of blade is exposed. Simmons are just plain dangerous.

I know tightspot  is a popular option. But not sure what it can handle.

Does anyone else have experience with these quivers?

I like that concept of a dual set of grippers. Time to let necessity become the mother of invention to solve the skirt issue.

Can you drill holes in the quiver hood's edge and attach a leather "skirt" around the hood bottom to add protection? Attach with tiny bolts/nuts/washers or maybe even micro zip ties?

I have scrap leather if you need some.

Maybe try with a card stock pattern first. I use cereal box card stock.

A new quiver needs to be designed eliminating foam in the hood. A double set of grippers would make foam unnecessary and the hood would just be needed to shroud the blades without touching or dulling them. I'll buy one as soon as somebody makes it, I need one that will cover Snuffers and Tree Sharks.
Lefties are the only ones who hold the bow in the right hand.

Hey Man...did Thunderhort change the material inside the quiver hood?  I've used them for 20 years with no issues with dulling heads....

AND...as most who know me know I use big nasties also...no problem with them either...Z Deltas, Z Sasquatch, Battle Axes, Ace Supers, German Kinetic Larges....no proble getting 5 of these in my 6 arrow boas with a judo in the 6th slot.

However...that quiver you are using kinda goes with that bow....COOL!

I would do as Bob suggests with some stiff latigo and pop rivets.

Terry,

I doubt thunderhorn has done anything different. But I did buy that quiver last year. Maybe I'm just deficient at inserting the heads properly? Is there a "right way" to do it. I just shoved a sharp head in to make slots and then just used those slots.

No doubt the thunderhorn would hold the Simmons. I really like the thunderhorn. But gizmos go with gizmos, trad goes with trad. Lol. The thunderhorn will probably stay on one of my wood bows.

My malfunction may be leaving the heads in the quiver all of the time. I.e. throw it in the car and driving around etc.

Ive also had some dulling effect when using a kanati slim jim, may be to a degree worse then the thunderhorn.

I think I may have an idea though. Ive got a bunch of the little plastic divider tabs that go in tackleboxes. I may see if I can Jerry rig something.

I'm not gonna lie though! If thunderhorn or another trad quiver type company had a dual gripper set up i would be all over it. They could probably do it with their lynx system. The only thing i want touching my meticulously sharpened heads is a deer....or hog.... or other critter that needs shooting.

And thanks for the compliment Terry. It's a down and dirty beater bow setup. I plan on doing some up close ground hunting so I rattlecanned it sort of following standard guides (I've already shot a hog at 3 ft, the thing walked right to me, no cover around or anything!). Something I did a little different was I sprayed on the base layer, immediately sprayed alcohol on, then immediately sprayed the next color on. The alcohol helps it dry faster and spraying everything on while still wet made a good muted splotchy pattern with good depth. Then I did The "snake skin" over The top. The main goal being a muted optical confusion. I think I succeeded! I've come to believe that optically confusing muted camo patterns with depth work better then hard edged leaf/tree pattern camos (so like asbell wool vs realtree or whatever). You can also look at the trends in the new military camos and see that. If your eyes can focus on the entire pattern at once it's no bueno. (And none of that matters for deer hunting! Lol    :archer:  )

I like my setup...but it has no soul!  So I'm longing for a new wood bow! A centaur would be acceptable   :)

Yes... exactly a triple carbon! I wonder if his wait is still forever?

If I see a used one pop up in the low to mid 50s, its gonna be hard to resist. Even though I've never shot one!

Kind of a belts-and-suspenders approach, but I have seen back quivers used with a solo-stalker type sheath for every broadhead (so they don't collide).

They are tied in so the arrow still slides out without them.

Kwikee kwiver can't cover up a Zwickey NM or Delta.

The two attachment points might make extraction a little quieter in theory but it's more to manage.  The head pivots down as you lift the shaft from one attachment point, putting the tip right into the hard quiver.  Then you have to slide up to the next point and free the shaft again there.  For me, it's harder to stay quiet with that setup than with foam and a single attachment point.
