OTC Deer Lures
« on: November 03, 2017, 08:19:00 PM »
Any of you guys have any luck with any Tinks or Golden Estrous or anything like that over the counter? With the rut coming up and a week to sit in Ohio starting next Wednesday I'm thinking on giving it a try? Never really used it before but it seems like it could help.

Just thought id see what yall thought? Anybody had any luck with it, or will I be alerting and spooking deer with it?

Have had decent luck with tinks and code blue. Word of caution mature does don't seem to like it. They will sound the alarm sometime. We can only use synthetics in va. Honestly I have been using ever calm in the stick the past 3 years and am seeing positive results.

I've seen them spook away from Tink's, but have had  good results with Pete Rickards super doe.

I've gotten away from using any attractants. Just me.

Good luck!

I too have had excellent luck with Ever Calm but, I use it in the liquid form on cloth or a wick. It doesn't attract, but has a calming effect when they are around it. The estrous attractants have never worked for me. Either they paid no attention to it or spooked at it.
I would've taken better care of myself,if I'd known I was gonna live this long!

Good luck!
I am in this boat.   I will say its like using a decoy!  Its awesome when it works but sometimes it has reverse effects.  With limited hunting time, I would rather not do anything that will potentially hurt my chances and gathering meat.

I've never had luck or confidence with OTC deer lures. With everyone and his brother using them I would think deer would get suspicious. I'd rather use the bladder contents from a doe in heat.

I have had limited results with either food or rut related scents. I still sometimes use them though.

I had a thought that I would like to get peoples opinion of. Suppose you take two decoys, a buck and a doe. Place them in front of your stand and wipe them down well with a scent killer. Then liberally use estrous doe smell and buck smell to attract attention to the set up.

Has anybody tried such a set up? How well did it work?

OTC Deer Lures?
Can you buy them through your pharmacist, and do you need a doctor's scrip?      :bigsmyl:

I have had very good results over the years by hanging my scent wicks at point-blank range. I have used Tinks, Wildlife Research, and a few others, that have in my opinion brought deer within a few feet of the wick. I just bought one named Black Widow made in Michigan. I have had very good results with some does and a couple of bucks this past week. I have had very few deer actually spook from the wick, but have shot quite a few at less than 10 yards, that I don't think otherwise would have came that close. It is a lot about using it at the right time, and not to early. Two things that have definitely proved to be successful are the hanging of a wick, and my grunt call. These are very good tactics of outsmarting a buck, but you still have to do everything else right also.

I used urine from a does bladder we had just watched get bred and we shot her. I took the urine out of the bladder which was about full put it in a clean quart jar . I thought I had the greatest attractant ever.I poured it on my blind and the ground around it,  over the days lots of deer came by but none paid any attention the doe in heet urine . This was the real deal and it didn't work you don't know what you are buying over the counter it may not even be from a deer . We used to buy buck deer scent it cost a buck came in a little clear plastic bottle it must have been full of glycerin when it would set it would settle and there was a little bit of brown stuff in the bottom . It was strong musk smell I once put it on the bottom of my boots and walked to my stand later a nice little 5x5 came with his nose down to the ground smelling my footsteps all the way till he got where I had put some on a stick in front of my stand. The arrow with a razor head on the end went all the way through him and stuck in the ground . That was probably 40 years ago I don't think they make that scent anymore.
