Murphy, He who I despise
« on: November 07, 2007, 09:29:00 PM »
Murphy started out working me over this past weekend. Sunday morning to be exact, nice but small 6 point pose’s for me 10 yards off the base of my ladder stand. Could not shoot him had I wanted, already punched that tag. My last buck tag is good for a 4 point on one side 1” or longer points. Shortly after his departure, another buck appears like out of no where. Roughfully 120 yards out in the field, he is a shooter. Has the point requirement and fair amount of mass. But he just won’t come play with me! He vacates the field of view, not to be seen again.
Sunday evening sitting in the same ladder stand, about 6:30 I hear people up at the house talking and banging things around. My stand is only about 150 yards behind my house. They are picking up a twin bed and crib we had and did not need. This is 30 minutes to having no light to shoot. Moments after the commotion up at the house. A doe and two fawns appear up row of pines I’m in. They act skittish, and take off in a hurry, HEADED MY WAY! And yup there he appears the bigger one I had seen in the morning. I can hear in the background the talking start back up at the house. I can hear the deer running my WAY. I can hear the buck grunting as he comes down off the ridge. I’m ready come on come on come on!! And they do, one of the fawns blast’s into the front of my stand. U turns right in front of the stand and stops looking back the way it had came.

Murphy shows his hand

10 Yards from being in front of my stand Mrs HOT DOE makes a hard left turn. Going through the pines and across the neighbors drive and onto his property. Taking Mr Rut Buck  on her heels.  And all I get is excited then disappointed!
Monday & Tuesday I do not hunt as we had very strong winds and rain. So I did house work that had been neglected for to long.

This morning brings a new cool day with a little snow falling this morning. The winds had subsided and where out of the west. Great morning to be in my river bottom stand a couple miles from the house.  I arrive a little late its already somewhat daylight, no matter I’m committed and going. I climb up into the stand and get settled in. It is located in a group of 5 trees that share the same base. They are fairly large 12-16” accoss each but give great cover. I love trees like these that just happen to grow in the right spot in the woods. 25 minutes after climbing in and getting settled. A real nice 125” class 8 point appears on my right front at 17 yards and is coming in and looks like around my backside.  Being left handed a real piece of cake. HAD I not been sitting and my bow hanging on a hook. On the side of the tree that had concealed his getting as close as he was. He is at a walk and hooks around and behind my tree stand. In this small amount of time, I have my bow in my hand and have stood in ultra slow motion. By this time he is behind me and the tree I’m in I’m sure has me concealed. So I swing around to my left to catch him coming out the other side. All is perfect cept cept one thing. Those three small saplings I had been going to cut down and did not. Totally stop me from having a quarter away 10 yard shot. And him not a clue in the world.  Sure hope he returns for reruns in the morning. And my old buddy Murphy DON’T! Those three saplings have given there ultimate sacrifice, and are horizontal with the earth.

I know each and every one of us has the same type things happen every year. Murphy is everywhere!! Just needed to vent a little bout my buddy who I despise!

:D  Ya gotta just keep on keeping on!

Dang, and here I go thinking me and Mr. Murphy were best friends.  He seems to always want to hang out, and now I see he is up north.  Well, he can stay...  :D    :biglaugh:  .  I would not know what to do if he did not take a seat next to me.  Keep hunting, surely he'll take a day off soon.

I met Mrs. Murphy tonight.
I went out tonight to hopefully take a doe. I hop up into my one my stands overlooking a field where the does hang out. I'm in the stand about 10 minutes and I get three does upwind about 40 yards. Alright, I played the wind right tonight. All they have to do is come down to me. Nope, they went the other way. A few more pop into the field upwind wind of me but go out into the field too far. I catch two more does crossing from the other field edge coming towards me. And then a nice 8pt. following them. I'm used my buck tag. I then get a doe come in to me, about 10 yards and start feeding. I'm waiting for a broadside shot, and then the 8 pt. comes in to scent check the doe. Both the doe and buck move downwind of me. I think, oh well I'm busted. Well, the buck gets a little scent of me and starts looking around but after a few minutes calms down . He then proceeds to walk under my stand. Gives me the 5 yard broadside, then turns around and gives me the other side. Ugh, would you get out of here already... Where's my doe... The buck  finally walks off into the woods. Where's my doe...I find my doe again, she is feeding 18 yards from me now. I pick my spot, draw. I see my fletching in flight. Why is my bow so loud? I then see my arrow go directly over the spot I'm burning a hole into.    I shoot over her back by a good 2 inches.

I play the wind right, get lucky on some downwind deer, and then I pluck a release instead of coming to a solid anchor.

To quote the 8th dwarf. "I'm a plucker".

Murphy resides in Dover Plains NY.  Or the S.O. B. followed me here.  I planned a NY Whitetail hunt w/ a friend who normally meets me in the Rockies to chase Elk.  Family responsibilities forced him to stay away from the Rockeis this year.  So,,,to keep our tradition alive I went to his place back east to chase whitetails.  We calculated the first week of November to be the exact time...10 days after the harvest moon, bucks should be feeling amorous....Murphy shows up, turns off the refridgerator/freezer.  The place only had it's first frost yesterday, the danged leaves haven't even fallen off the hard-wood  trees, the does aren't in estrous, the bucks are still in bachelor groups and if I can find Murphy alone on some hillside I'll hit him with a Judo where the sun don't shine...

   :banghead:

6 solid days of hunting in established treestands that have produced in past years and my buddy and I have not seen one danged whitetail.

hormoan, Old Murphy made it to Maryland this evening. After filling my second doe tag yesterday and now ready to take the boys on, a nice ear wide racked buck (try not to count points while concentrating) comes in to check out his scrape area. Well, 20+ yards and quatering away, feeling pretty confident with the shot I picked that spot and let her rip. Oh well, didn't see that limb there but I sure heard it. I just waved bye bye as he trotted up the hill.

By the way JDinPA, that was a Liberty buck, and a pretty good one at that.

I think old Murphy lives a little in each and everyone of us. We kinda blow off some of the things that go though our heads. Like I should cut those couple saplings down behind my stand   :knothead:   and don't. Other times we are just innocent plain and simple. No control over the cards that are delt. Just like that limb jumping out in front of your arrow Hatrick. Dang limbs, had it happen to me also. I've heart shot a few my self   :D

And thanks Tim, best wishes to you. Enjoy your time in the woods and may Diana be with you. Only squirrels this morning. But a real nice one chasing a doe along side 131 this morning going to work. Tomorrow is another story yet to be told and beheld. Good luck one and all!
