The Longbow....
« on: February 06, 2018, 10:16:00 PM »
Is it just me or is shooting and hunting with a longbow just more fun , just feels better in the hand , I’m not sure what it is about the longbow. Many years ago all I hunted with was selfbows and longbows then for some reason I started really only shooting a recurve. Don’t get me wrong I love my recurves still but always liked longbows better. I would shoot a critter here and there with a longbow over the last many years then back to the recurve. This last season a friend let me borrow a very nice Schafer longbow and I shot a few nice bucks with it and I think it turned me back on to longbows cause now that’s all I want to shoot. I picked up a really cheap factory longbow last week and really like it ( $195 shipped ) thing looks and shoots great. Matter of fact I liked it so much I bought another one just like it , setting one up for carbons and one for woods ( guess I need to learn to make some good wood arrows now ). Going to take them out for a hunt this weekend and see if they are killers....

I dunno.  I go through cycles.  Been shooting sticks for about 60 years now.  Have gone from self-bows to recurves to longbows to hybrids, not necessarily in that order, and back again two or three times.

Have all of them in my stable.  Have been shooting mostly longbows and hybrids the past 20 years, but shot mostly recurves for quite a spell before then.

It's all good.  Hunted with a recurve out West this year and a longbow for the deer season at home.

I love my Longbow as well only reason I took the Recurve off the shelf was I felt guilty. It has put many a critter on the ground for me in years past.
Have a good hunt! We will be awaiting pics of your success

I started out with the recurve and enjoyed it a lot. Then I met Dan Quillian and started shooting his Bamboo Longhunter. I really liked that bow! Eventually, I tried a Hill bow, and that was that. It just fits me better than a recurve. I have a couple of nice recurves, an early Wing Red Wing Hunter and a Bear Kodiak Magnum, but they just don't call my name like the Hill style. So, your comments reflect my feelings exactly.

I grew up with recurves and still shoot one occasionally. I use a recurve for bow fishing but have hunted and shot longbows for the last 37 years. Just something about it that I like.

I remember plinking with a .22 when I was a kid. That's the feeling I get when I shoot a longbow. Cool factor goes way up!

Been a longbow guy for the last 4 seasons.  This season I bought a talltines recurve and killed 2 deer with it.  Really like the mass of a recurve but I love shooting longbows.  Bought a Kohannah Fury Extreme this year to add to the repertoire.  Might consider buying a 3 piece longbow to get the best of both worlds.

I used recurve for a while, but then I switched over to Longbow.  I just recently got one from Dan Toelke.  A  56"   38# @ 28" . It really draws smooth. It seems like it shoots faster then 38 #.   But he sure does  good work.  But it was a little more then $1.95     :biglaugh:

I remember in 1973 I got my first deer with a longbow. I was hooked after that.

But sometimes you can find those good ones at those lower prices. It's not about the price, it's about if it suits your style, and works well.
Sounds like you got a good deal.

I know where you are coming from Sam. I love longbows but recurve bows have a special place in my heart. Good luck this weekend with your longbow

I think your right. I’m currently tradbowless... and I have had recurves lately for past years. My second bow was a longbow. And I miss it.
I have been thinking of getting a longbow for some time now. I have a list of ones I interested in. Did the research long ago n then when I’m ready. I can start looking and already know what I want.
More into the hybrid or r/d longbows not the traditional ones

I have recurves, ILF stuff, R/D longbows, but there is just something about a "D" shaped longbow that just feels good to me. Got a Hill, then another........then a Northern Mist and then another. Bama bow, a McBroom and few more Hills. Then a 2 piece Hill that I had made for me......will it ever end, I hope not.

I have nine long bows and have purchased two Hills this year and just cannot stop shooting them.I shoot wood and I amazed at how accurate  they are. Granted I'm a back yard hero but these hill long bows are awesome.I do have two recurves but have not shot them since 1994.

I hadn't shot longbows heavily in prob over 40 years. This past summer I picked one up. I was rebuilding strength from surgery and looked at it like a stepping stone. Thing ain't leaving!  I ordered another heavier weight but I'm still not selling the light one. I love em and my recurves all sit now. My bowfishing rig is set up as a recurve but that may change too.

My first traditional bow was a recurve, but once I shot a longbow it was all over. For some reason I feel more of a connection with a longbow.

I've always been drawn to the longbow for its simplicity and elegance, even as a kid. Once I got into building hybrids, it became really hard to switch to anything else.

Love 'em!
