I'm an oddball...
« on: February 19, 2018, 10:02:00 PM »
...in many ways. But, what I'm referring to is my hand shape/size. I can't find a shooting glove that fits well enough to buy. I have big hands, but skinny fingers. Basically, I think I need an XL glove for the length (8.5" from wrist to the end of my middle finger), but probably Medium finger stalls for the diameter.

I've been shooting a tab, but I think I would prefer using a glove - just need to find a good one that fits. Any recommendations?

Give John at American Leathers a call...he will build what you need from a hand trace and it will fit.

You could get a NEET classic glove.  The length is adjustable. If the stalls are too big, poke a couple holes and sew them a bit tighter.

I have had several of the Neet gloves and while they worked well as far as adjustablity, the tip overlay would fall off within 6 months.  On the other hand, I have been  shooting the same American Leathers Bigshot for the past 2 years and it is still going strong.  A product that costs 2x as much but lasts 5x as long is an excellent buy.

I've been wearing Damascus gloves for many years. Once, I inadvertently bought a glove that was a size too small. I soaked it in warm water and put my hand in it to stretch it then removed it to let it dry. After it dried I treated it with Montana Pitch Blend and it worked fine for me for a few years when I'd normally replace a glove.
There are some gloves that this wouldn't necessarily work with but it might be a option for you.

I soak the finger stalls in water, slip the glove in a sock and dry it in the dryer . ( don't over dry ) shrinks the stalls and fits fine .

Zach,
If you get to a shoot or show with vendors, find a display of gloves and try them on regardless of the size marked on the glove or the package.  I have found a lot of differences in diameter and length of finger stalls in packages marked the same size.  This is one of the reasons I won’t order one from on line dealers.  American Leathers makes great gloves, but they are the brand that has the most variation in size, at least when I try them on.  Sometimes I take a medium, sometimes large.  Their buffalo leather glove with the nylon insert between two layers of leather has the longest and biggest diameter of finger stalls of all their models—again, based only on my trying many on to get the ‘right’ fit.

I received my custom fit American Leathers glove in the mail this week. I couldn't be more pleased. It fits perfectly, and I'm getting a clean release every time. Thanks everyone for the advice.

My hands are the same. I've gottten excellent fit in an American Leathers size large (not a custom, but I sent John a tracing - he sent both a medium and a large for me to compare), and in the kangaroo glove from Big Jim's in a medium.

Wear some poly liner gloves under your shooting glove or use a tab for better shooting.
