cleaning wax from bow limbs?
« on: February 25, 2018, 05:30:00 PM »
what is the best way to clean wax from bow limbs? I freshly waxed string was left tight to the limbs unstrung and a LOT of wax is caked on.

Acetone will clean it right up!

I would be careful with acetone its pretty hot and can attack and soften some types of finish.

Yeah I would rather naptha before acetone.  I agree with Charlie, soft cloth and work usually works great on most satin limbs in my experience.

I dab BriWax on mine and let it dry for a dull "camo" for hunting.

To remove it a cotton rag and a LOT of elbow grease.  You have to rub hard enough to warm the wax and bow.  Shines like a new bow after that.

If you rubbed it off in warm temperatures, it would be less work.

I would use Goo Be Gone and soft rag or soft cloth.Has worked superbly on my bows and has not harmed finish. You wont have to use much elbow grease. It works on all kinds of other grime, oil, soot, grease, soft glues, adhesives etc.So its a good product for other projects,as well.

Ken, stick it in the camp fire.  Works every time. Of course it will also remove your bow too.      :p

Denatured alcohol cuts wax, leave no residue or film, and wont affect finishes. I use it for pre finish wipe down on redoing bows, cabinets, arrows, all kinds of uses.It is a great degreaser.

Just like a surfboard...put it in the sun for a bit, or use a hair dryer, wipe off with paper towel. Cloth doesn't work well. Goof-off if you want a short cut.

91% Isopropyl Alcohol on a soft cloth will remove it and is a lot less scary than Acetone on fiberglass. I never wax my Satin/Matte finished bows, I clean them with a glass cleaner or Alcohol.

Good advice for cleanup above, my vote would be for denatured alcohol too,

I'd add too that IF you are getting string wax on the limbs of your unstrung bow that you are using too much wax.  Just like oiling a gun, more is NOT better.
