Marvin - i press the sound pipe into my bottom lip but you are correct, the top lip is the "reed".  I don't know if there is a right or wrong way but press the flattest side of the oval to my lip is more consistant for me.  it will make sounds on any side but some ways are a little harder to get a good yelp.  I like you just figured it out myself, so if ya come up with sumpin good let me know....or if any of ya guys is exerpt at it help us out here  :)

OK how ya coming??  oh ya can't find no dang slate in your town.  ya been to the rock shops, the landscaping rock place, the aquarimum rock place and they got not slate?????  turkey seasons si coming and ya don't have no time to do no dang order for slate......oh well why didn't ya tell me!  :)

stop by home depot and get ya cheap glass cutter.  stop by the glass shop and see if they have some 1/8" thick plate glass (they will if not go to the picture framing shop and buy an 8x10 piece of picture frame glass).

ok take it home.  now crave ya out a striker.  use a hickory dowel about 6" long it ya can't find nothing else.  i like privet as a one piece striker.  very dense, real close grain

take your glass and get your orbital sander.  put on some 60 grit. (ware gloves and a dust mask)  "etch"  and end of the glass by sanding it with 60 grit.  after a run is complete frost to the same density, try it with your sticker.  if will be loud.  like a hen on steriods.  change grits of sand paper till ya fell ya got a good tooth on your glass.  when ya do use your glass cutter and cut a piece of "toothed" glass 2"x1&5/8".  waring your gloves and dust mask sand the edges a bit round, round the conners a bit and toothe the bottom of the blade to hold the glue to glue it on your box.

etched glass (toothed in our case) give ya a loud, boomer, sharp call.  I think it is best used for distance.  i have a hard time toning glass done to that close in "come hither big boy" call but I can flat knock him of the roost.  :)

when I first got started using a sractch box, I was hunting with an old tuckeyh call hand.  I wa having a little trouble with my slate even after I toothed it.  he took myh striker and burned the very tip with is zippo.  oh man made such a smoother tone.  i never really figured out what exactly burning the tip of your wood stiker for slate (glass) does but it works.

Nick

I tried some plexi glass this morning.  I had to used very fine sand paper to get a tooth on it.  it did talk turkey but would not hold the tooth very long at all so it lost it's squeek.  I think there are different densities of plexi glass but the one i had was not satisfactory.  how did yours turn out.

the best glass I have is some pyrex that a friend of mine sand blasted.  very consistant and tuff for glass.  i have grits in sand blastering also.  not sure what grit she used.  she is a glass artist, stained glass, etched glass, etc. heee heee I wonder what colors she has  :)

If ya'as is seriuos about turkey hunting, there is nothing (IMO) that beats a mouth read.  no hands, can tone it down or kick it up making it very practicle for the trad bow hunter.

I had to pratice a bit with mine before i got it down solid.  I have to buy 2 or 3 a year cause i lose them somehow. so for nevr lost a scratch box.
