Took a couple shots today.
« on: March 14, 2007, 06:34:00 PM »
Went to my Brothers house today outside town I had taken my Howard Hill bow just in case I saw a jackrabbit on the drive. Didn't see any rabbits, the wind was blowing about 30 mph. I took a couple shots at a sagebush instead, & about a foot out of the bow my arrow turned sidewase about 30 degrees & centered the sagebush I shot at. It looked so neat going sideways I shot a few more to watch them fly. Kind of fun!
I chronographed this bow at home yesterday, & got the following results: Arrow weight 573gr POC 29-1/2" long,125gr field point.
Bow Howard Hill 66" Big Five purchased from Bob Burton 61lb@28. I draw just 28".
Shot 21 arrows through the Chrony @ 2' from point of arrow. Average Vel. for 21 shots 170.8 FPS extreem spread for the 21 arrows 11.9 fps.
What I found that was very interesting about the 5 shot I discovered that when I really concentrated of form I would get average 172.2 fps. When I just shot without concentraiting on form I averaged 168 fps. Form does count & I intend to research this further with my Chronograph. Interesting. Frank

Form is everything.
Bad form,  bad release typically missed target.
Good form, clean release tipcally hit target.
My questions why did arrow shoot sideways?
Short draw?
or
Arrow not tune too bow, arrow flies sideways.   :bigsmyl:

Bet that strong crosswind had an effect.

Jim the arrows fly great with a mild or no wind. I have noticed the same effect at other times in a wind much over 20 mph. I really think it's the wind.
Same bow heavier arrow today. A Whispering Wind arrow same dozen I hunt with only a field point instead of broadhead. It's a split hex shaft 29-1/2"BOP weighs 659 grs shot 21 shots over the Chrony 2'from arrow point & averaged 160.2 fps. I am pleased with that, should be able to get a deer if I do my part. Frank

Bill how ya doing? Haven't heard from you in a while. Yup I'm having a ball got the water on the backyard so no chronographing today. I bought the Hill from a friend Bob Burton, who due to an injury is having to learn to shoot left handed. Once I shot Mike Gs Hill & saw how nice it was I got the bug for a Hill, when this one came available I bought it. I am doubly lucky that my 55-59lb spine arrows fly really great off this bow. With any luck I may get to point it at an Elk this year. Take Care. Frank

Jim, I love them you can get a really heavy arrow if you want one & they are very tough. I have had them repeatedly take head on hits on tough stumps & not be damaged. I get mine from Bob Burton  www.whisperingwindarrows.com   Bob is really knowlegable & can fix you up with the proper spine & weight for your needs. Frank
