i've tried to hunt from the ground more this year and boy is it tough. yesterday i went to a ground blind that i built a couple of weeks ago. right i noticed that it was too thin. leaves had fell off and some of the stuff i cut had settled lower than i liked. well it as too late to go anywhere else so i sat there anyway. 15 minutes a later a big doe came in and 5 yards away from a draw my seat squeaked slightly(the seat is another post) she saw me right away and after a stare down for a few minutes she left. then right at dark i was aleady standing 2 more came in and i went to draw and they blew out like i had a neon sign on my head. anyway  2 things that i have learned this year are when you build a ground blind, you need to build it right. i have  build them too thin and the other is ground hunting is tough!

Dog, I have been hunting from the ground for over 15 years. Love it. Ya gotta have back cover and lots of it! Keep at and when ya score you may find yourself like hunt the ground better. Sides double lung shots = very short trailing.

I agree with stick,, I find I hide more with big back cover,, Like a huge oak with a fall down next to it,,but 5 yrds is 5 yrds,, any ground pounder will tell ya, no matter the blind any small mistake like a squeek will bust ya if the game is only five yards,,,, I had deer at about 14 yards with nothing in front of me, but I was next to a big tree and a blow down and off to the side of their expected line of travel,,J

I've always hunted from the ground. Overtime I have found that what Stic said is very true about back cover. I also like to go a bit further. Since I am right handed and usually set up with my back to a tree, and the predominant trails coming in from behind. I like to create a lot of cover to my right side since I cannot shoot in that direction without making a lot of movement. Sort of sitting in a corner so to speak, with one "wall" to my right and the other at my back. This way any deer that do come up on the right won't see me and should present a shot once past all the cover I had set up on my right. Hope that helps. Keep at it.

I have found the back cover is more important than the front. I have stood with my back to a big maple with a lot of bushes growing behind it and just two small maple trees in front and had deer walk past and not look at me until the got along side of me from the right and could see me sticking out away from the big maple. That happened waiting for the doe to pass to get a shot at the buck that was following her.She didn't break and run or throw up a flagging tail she just did the head bob and looked at me from different angles and then just hurried her pace and the buck who had held just out of range, trotted past to catch up to her and I did feel comfortable shooting at a buck moving that fast. The trail was a little under 15 yards from the maple. I agree ground hunting can be tough but MAN OH MAN is it a rush!

i should have been more clear. these deer were about 15 yds. it was about 5 yards fron my shooting lane. thanks for the advise. i built a better blind after church today.  a lot more background.
