Breathing technique?
« on: April 03, 2007, 09:35:00 PM »
As a child I was taught to take aim with a rifle by taking a deep breath and slowly letting about 1/2 of it out, holding the 1/2 breath, and then squeezing the shot when the sight picture was perfect.  I've started including this in a way with my barebow shooting and it seems to really bring my shot together better.  I don't necessarily hold my breath and aim but do inhale slowly as I draw slowly and hold my breath as I hit anchor and release.  Do any of you hold your breath or have a particular breathing routine you use in your shot sequence?

what you want to do is take a couple deep breaths, inhale then slowly release it, when your at the end of your breath there is a slight moment where there is nothing no holding and no reelesing of breath thats when you want to sgeez the trigger.at least thats what i do for shooting a rifle, it might be diferent for bow.i may be new to bowhunting but no new to guns.

Maybe my question was misleading.  I wasn't asking how you shoot a rifle but if anyone has a particular breathing technique in their shot sequence when shooting a BOW?

I think your breathing technique when shooting a bow depends on how you shoot the bow.  If you shoot it in a very deliberate way, where you hold for several seconds at full draw before releasing, and particularly if you use sights or some substitute for sights such as gap, then a similar breathing method to that used when shooting a rifle would be appropriate.  The idea would be to minimize movement while aiming.

If you shoot instinctively, perhaps using the swing draw method, and release as soon as you come to full draw and anchor, then I think your focus should be so much on the target that you have no memory of breathing, anymore than a baseball shortstop would as he scoops up a grounder and fires it off to first base.

Recently I started using a clicker which caused me to have to hold several seconds at full draw before releasing.  My body was tiring quickly, however, taking a couple of deep breaths before drawing the bow gave me the added strength I needed since it allowed the flow of more oxygen to the muscles.
