Archery boring or fun
« on: April 10, 2007, 08:12:00 AM »
I attended an SCA archery event this past weekend which ranked right up there with watching paint dry.  We had about two hours to shoot arrows at a couple of 20 and 30 yard targets.  Myself and a friend decided enough was enough.  I started a game of Chase-the-Arrow then Chase-the-Archer and finally Blind Archer.  No prizes just a winner of each round acknowledged.  Right after the scheduled competition (twenty minutes and maybe ten arrows later) I left for a bit.  When I came back they were back to more fun and games.  I think we opened up a whole new world of archery to them.  They shot longer and better than they normally would have.  (I think the organizer kept the range open a couple of hours longer than planned because everyone kept flinging arrows instead of leaving in boredom. Even the casual strollers were stopping to see what the archers were doing now.  :)

Thats why I don't shoot 3D. Not as fun as roving the woods and stumpshooting plus I don't have to wait for shooters in front of me to finish up or complain us trad guys take too long. All the 3D shoots here in the Hudson Valley...those days will find me fishing for smallmouths or bucketmouths.......

I stopped going to 3-D shoots where the they did not have a different course for Trad I hate having to wait 20 to 30 mins to shoot one target. I had rather stay at home and shoot in the backyard.

If I'm shooting, I'm having fun.

Join a traditional-only club.  Randy Grider and the guys do a fantastic job setting targets for our KTBA shoots and I can GUARANTEE you wouldn't get bored at one of these things.

It is never boring when I hear the wheelie guys saying "I can't believe you did that with a long bow". they were letting us trad shooter shoot through and felt their arrows in the ten ring of the 36yds ?? for us target were safe. when my freind Larch stepped to the line and shot the nock off one of thier arrows. I could have laughed out loud at the look on thier faces. cost of the shoot $12 that moment in time PRICELESS

Yup... We can shoot 5 arrows in the time it takes the non-Trad guys to shoot one! And they are always backed up on the targets! Not fun. It also puts a damper on my ability to focus. I'm with Joe and you other guys. I'd rather go stumping or shoot my own target. Although, I do think Trad Only 3D shoots are a blast.
Someday you and I will take the Great Hart by our own skill alone, and with an arrow. And then the Little Gods of the Woods will chuckle and rub their hands and say, "Look, Brothers. An Archer! The Old Times are not altogether gone!"

I'm wondering the same thing.  Is Chase the arrow like playing H-O-R-S-E but only with arrows?  And the Blind archer I have no idea but sounds like fun.

Chase-the-arrow = first archer shoots an arrow then the rest try to hit it with one arrow.  closest to original arrow wins and shoots next target arrow. (really teaches you to pick a spot rather than shooting center of mass)
Blind-archer = two person team one closes eyes draws bow while other person trys to direct them on to the target. Closest team (both arrows) to middle wins. (lets you really see if you are overbowed and gets lots of laughs)
Chase-the-archer = Winning archer shoots and all others must shoot from the same place and style. (sitting, standing, laying, backwards, etc.)
String grouping = Shoot preset # of arrows wrap string around group and shortest string wins. (flyers will kill your group so pay attention.)

Brian,
Looking forward to getting together with you and all the others next weekend. (Do you have your flu flus ready)  My target panic shortdrawing days are pretty much over.  I was shooting with Shamus last weekend and was holding my own although he may have edged me out a bit.  But like you I intend to make the finals for the first time since I was hit with TP.
