another bare shaft tuning question
« on: April 13, 2007, 08:03:00 AM »
Have been shooting traditional for 20 years but never did any bare shaft tuning until now.  Always just put enough feather on the back to steer the arrows to the mark in the past.  I now have a 66# bw maII drawing 28" with a 29" arrow.  Followed the bare shaft tuning instructions on Adcock's website and found the 2018's I had been shooting were way underspined...shooting 18" to the right.  Tried 2020's, 2216's, 2117's and finally settled on 2219's.  The 2219's are shooting well, but the bare shafts are still hitting 3"-4" higher than the fletched shafts, but with no noticeable erratic flight.  Seems to me this is ok because the additional drag of the feathers would slow the arrow down and result in that much drop at 20 yards.  I don't think it is a nocking point problem.  Does my conclusion seem right or should I still be tinkering with the nock point?

I would try moving the nock point up and down and adjust as to the results seen. Also if she is still stiff it could be kicking off the shelf, try adding point weight, powder the shelf and shoot to look for contact. I have never had the feathers (3 5" shields helical) slow the arow enough at twenty yards to change impact point, especially with 66# high performance bow.

I have a setup similar to yours (65# SAII, with 2219's cut to 29") that bare shafts well.  You didn't mention your point weight, but I'm using 125 grain points.  You also didn't mention how far you are actually drawing the bow.  Are you drawing a full 28"?  I draw mine about 27 1/2", so am not getting the full 65 lbs.  So if I am getting perfect arrow flight with my setup, it could be a little weak spined for you.  If you are drawing to a full 28", you may be drawing 2-3 lbs more than I am.

If you can, have someone stand behind you when you shoot and see if there is a momentary blip up when you shoot feathers that is not there when you shoot bare shafts.  That would indicate feather contact with the rest, which might explain your grouping.  If you can't get rid of it by changing the orientation of the feathers, I would raise the nock point enough to get rid of it, because a consistent tail high is not as much of a problem as feathers hitting the rest.

Thanks, I guess I'll play with the nock point a little more over the weekend.
