Switching from split to 3-under question
« on: March 26, 2007, 05:01:00 PM »
I have always felt that having the arrow closer to the eye was an advantage, but 3-under always felt awkward when I tried it.  Last week I was playing around with a bare shaft I keep in my quiver to troubleshoot with when I've changed something.  I'm one of those people that seems to always get a slight nock high with a bare shaft that I can't adjust out with nockset height.  I've pretty much chalked it up to a crappy release. When I shot a few arrows 3-under the arrow was dead straight! What gets me is I didn't adjust nock height.  I thought I would have to move it up to switch from split to 3-under.  What gives? Am I a freak of nature? I'm going to make the transition because it allows me to use the feather on my nose as a draw check, correcting another of my many flaws.

It varies for everybody.  I shoot mine at almost 90 degrees to get best results.  It may also make a slight difference as to how your bow is tillered.  If it works, stick with it.

I just went in the other direction---3 under too split...I anchor with my index finger on my cheekbone--it is a higher anchor and also puts the arrow under my eye...I also seem to be getting better arrow flight---

I have a "fat" head and smaller mouth--thus anchoring on my cheekbone---works for me..

I also find that nock set varies by bow, style--sometimes the size of the nock--from a larger wooden nock to a smaller mini diameter carbon has made a difference for me--

--------Good luck-------Mark

In the last year or so I went to 3 under and I have tried to go back to split just to see how I shoot and it feels really weird.  Like everybody else has said, there is no one way that works for everybody so do what works for you.

Dittos to what Flatlander said.

Remember...our bodies are not all the same....thus.....we will not all anchor the exact same way.

For me....I've got big hands and a big, bulky thumb that gets in the way when I shoot split.

Shooting three under gets the thumb out of my way.

If the goal is getting the arrow to the right spot.....you can anchor by your ear if you want.  Who cares what normal is!!  :scared:

Best to ya!
When the journey becomes as valuable as the goal........go "traditional."

3 undr w/ index at corner of mouth w/ proper (BACK TENION).Try this while looking into a mirror and notice how your shoulders and arms and arrow shaft are at the same plane.
