Who shoots from long range?
« on: May 26, 2007, 09:32:00 AM »
I recently started shooting a good bit from what I consider to be long range (30-40 yards).  I think it has really helped my form and concentration.  I've also found it to be a lot of fun.  It is really pretty to see a good flying arrow drop into the bullseye from 35 or 40 yards.  I'm not trying to prepare for longer shots hunting, but I feel like shooting from longer distances has made me better from 0-20 yards.

When I'm at the range I love trying those 50-80 yd shots....
Eagle24...out here in CA 35-40 yd shots are common at the 3D shoots....

Mike,

Get off the computer and start working on my quiver!  :biglaugh:   Just kidding!

The last trad shoot I attended in AL had a couple of shots that were around 30 yards.  Fortunately, they were big targets: Buffalo, Elk, & Lion.  I have more trouble with the close Turkeys, Coons, & Gators.

I like shooting 40-50 yards at the range, helps identify form errors for me.

it is a perfect 60 yards across my back yard, and I find that it helps when I'm stalking and can't get a  close enough shot (spooked deer) or a hog. having that extra range definitely helps....

Since this is a shooters forum, and not a bowhunters forum, the 30-40 yard ranges should probably be considered as medium range.  I often shoot 3d along with the compounders.  That means shooting up to about 50 yards or so.  Although some traditional archers may be good enough to use an instinctive style for medium range shots, I find it essential to develop an aiming system.  For the long range, 50-80+ yards, it seems important to accurately judge distance and to have an aiming system.

Being primarily a hunter and casual 3-D shooter 30 is as far as I like to practice instinctivly, although I prefer to keep my hunting shots at 20 yds or less, but that is another topic.

Eagle, what are long shots for some may be short or medium for others and visa versa. Practicing at longer ranges does help shorter range shots as your form must be better to consistently hit the longer shots.

I agree with Jim that having some sort of aiming system helps a great deal at longer ranges, Don't FITA shooters shoot 90 meters? Now that's long range. I practice longer ranges for form using the arrow point as front sight.

So tell me Mike, is it hard to see 80 yards in California smog?

I'm somewhat new, but I'll launch a few at 60+ yds. It's quite fun. I still spen 95% of my time under 20. Once I've got my form consistent, then maybe I can be more serious at longer ranges.
