I have a fatal flaw in my shooting style/form. Hi guys/gals, I've been shooting recurves since childhood, and after a few years in compounds, I've returned to traditional equipment. I currently shoot a lowbow and though I've tried a few recurves, I just love the feel of my lowbow.

 My fatal flaw is that I put a serious cant on the bow to hit my target. Works great in the warmer months but ruins me when it is time to bulk on clothing for deer season. The string hits the clothing drooping off my bow arm. I've tried to re-learn with less cant or bend my bow arm..but when the critter is in the sights..years of shooting kinda kill any short term re-learning.  Daulp. Any ideas?

I used to do re-creation/re-enactment stuff (when I could afford it and before it got political), wearing shirts with big, droopy sleeves. I also cant my bow when I shoot... All you need to do is either tie up the sleeve and keep it out of the way, or use one of those "full arm" guards that extend well above the elbow. Worked for me, both ways.

You could also wear layers -- cotton t-shirt and long-sleeve over-shirt with wool or wool/blend coat, instead of big, bulky things such as down coats. Clothing does not have to be loose or bulky to be warm.

Vest and hood is how I like to add. Heavy longjohns and wool, when I need more I add to torso/neck/head.

I usually shoot with a near vertical bow position and still have problems with bulky winter clothing.  I try to wear clothing that is relatively tight and sometimes use duct tape or large rubber bands to restrict the clothing.  That works until the weather turns really cold and I need the heavy clothing.  My heaviest clothing is a Cabelas jumpsuit with a moisture barrier and thinsulate insulation.  It is good to zero and colder but the sleeves are very bulky.  It may look a bit strange but I wear and old flannel shirt on top.  I dyed the shirt a dark green to sort of blend with the camo.

A guy I met at a shoot recently said he'll take a dark colored sock(black,brown,green)cut the toe out of it and slide it all the way up his arm almost to his armpit.Said it holds loose clothing snug to the arm.tradrick

Try shooting with a more open stance. People shooting compounds tend to shoot straight in line with the target with their feet inline with the target.Try moving your rear foot away from you to open your stance. That will give you more clearance for your bow arm. Sure don't want the string to hit anything when you release at game, that's a good way to end up with a blood trail that's green instead of red which I would never wish on my worst enemy.

I never even considered that, WestTnMan! I'm gonna blame it on those couple years of compound use. I've done as other folks have posted by attempting to squash down any bulky, cold weather gear but I never thought about a change in stance. I've always fiqured it was my crazy bow cant that killed me. I've tried to change that but just can't. I'll try the stance change tomorrow. Thanks!

How did it work? I had the same problem when I made the switch over and this is what solved my problem. I don't even wear an arm guard anymore and haven't for years.

It got dark before I got a chance to shoot. I'm truely starting from scratch and currently have only one arrow spined correctly. I was out hitting all the local stores for traditional archery equipment. Struck out..3Rivers here I come!

I'm still trying to find a hat to wear while hunting/shooting my recurves.  The string hits the bill on my baseball style stuff, and I flat out refuse to turn it around backwards.  Nor will I tie a do-rag around my head.  Ain't happening...

Of course, wearing a stocking cap when it's cool/cold works, but I haven't figured anything out for when it's mild outside.

Maybe I need to find a camo beret of some type...

Apparently, you have not reviewed "October Whitetails". Not only is a baseball cap stylish but is has become my poorman's hearing aid.

Try a fedora, Fred Bear wore one...

Or you could go with one of those "crushable" hats put out by Minnetonka Leathers. Their "Fold-Up" hat is great -- fits in a pocket just by folding it up, and it "pops" back into shape; just don't go for the black, wearing a black leather hat on a sunny day is like wearing a heat-sink on the head (If I could afford it, I would replace mine with a brown hat. I just had to be "stylish", though, and get a black one...).

I use a floppy cloth hat.  There is no brim but about 2" of fabric all around the hat.  I can adjust the hat to screen from sun in my eyes.  If the string does touch the hat, there is no stiff brim and I can barely feel it.  I am still looking for a good winter hat.  I have been wearing a wool stocking cap, but I need to find something with a soft brim to keep the sun out of my eyes.

October Whitetails is one of the very few hunting videos I have (I'm not a big fan of videos as to me hunting doesn't translate well as a spectator sport unless you are there in real time). Seems to me Mr. Wensel also explained that the bill turned sideways fools the deer into thinking he's not looking at them.  Always wanted to meet the Wensel boys, just never had the opportunity...

Thanks for the hat suggestions, I'll snoop them out...

As for the original question here, I buy a roll of 1" flat elastic strap and sew loops in varying sizes to hold the sleeve of my bow arm clothing tight to the arm....
