check nocks before tuning
« on: September 28, 2007, 01:19:00 AM »
hopefully this post can save somebody money/time.  i  recently finished (i thought) tuning my bow/ arrow combination - martin bamboo viper, CE Heritage 350's.  got to the point where accuracy was good, arrow flight was OK, only complaint was the bow was noisy - string was twanging.  saw the dvd "masters of the barebow", where i learned nock fit can effect noise and arrow flight.  filed down my nocks, so string fit was perfect. no more noise, but now arrows are over-spined, because i cut them too short.  so my advice to other newbies like me, is if  your tuning results show nock left, check your nock fit before you start cutting arrows.  there should be just enough friction to hold the arrow on the string.

I would think some extra point weight should be able to take care of the over spine.

Yes Sir,
Nock fit is an over looked item, due in fact to the fear of many archers over the years of having their arrow fall off the string during the drawing process.  This is primarly a Compound thing, due to the use of release aids.  One must be careful not to over file, but as stated, with a little work, then can be made to relax there grip on the bow string.

I like it for another reason, I have been caught with my pants down once or twice by not having an arrow on the string when game showed up. I have spooked more than a few when the snap of my knock, try as I might to muffel the sound, on my string seemed as if John Phillips Sousa just struck up the band.  It is amazing how little a sound it takes to make game turn inside out.
