Grouping 4-5" left but....
« on: February 23, 2008, 02:50:00 PM »
I am cofused right now. i am shooting a slight rf/df longbow and am right handed. It is 62@29 and I draw a true 29" (clicker). I am shooting 70-75# arrows that are 29 and3/4 with 125 gr heads. I am consistently shooting a few inches to the left. Here's the twist. When I drop down in spine weight I shoot a foot and a half to two feet to the left.  :knothead:   What gives? I've never had this problem before, but mabey I wasn't shooting well enough to know LOL. Any advise? I'm thinking of moving up in spine.

Are you gap shooting or aiming by focusing on the arrow Steadman?  If you are shooting using an instinctive method even if you slightly notice the arrow, then I would say you are losing a bit of back tension or collapsing your bow arm before the release.  Hold that bow arm dead still next time you shoot and you should be grouping in the bull or hitting left still.  If still hitting left then concentrate fully on your back tension. If you have back tension and a positive anchor, you should not hit left anymore.  Most of my missing is left by  5 inches or less at 9 o'clock on the bullseye.  It is guaranteed to be from loss of push/pull.  I figured this out from reading all the postings on this site when I first joined late last year.  Terry Green refers to 'alignment' all the time.  Rod Jenkins says it is like tearing apart a rope.  Imagine the arrow as your "rope".  Pull too hard backwards and the front gives out if you don't have equal push.  Push too hard forward and not enough tension pulling back and you go left.  If you don't push straight at the target when you release, the sudden loss of pressure on your bow hand causes the bow to move in the direction your force was applied.  I am no expert, just a guy starting to figure out his shot from all the help given in here.  I can only tell you what causes my mistakes and what I do to fix it.  I can tell you this though:  Since I have worked on alignment and used Terry's clock method of alignment, I have increased my draw length from 26.5 inches to 29 inches and up to 30 inches when I am warmed up!  I am shooting better and more consistent than ever before.

Thanks Chuck. Yea I use the arrow, but not as an aiming, more of an alignment. I still concentrate on the spot. I will try to use more back tension when I release.

Your arrows may be too "weak" in spine.

The arrow is flexing too "Much" to get through paradox cleanly and the fletched portion is hitting the riser as it passes. As you decrease spine it gets worse, hits harder and deflects more to the left.

Good news is that your form must consistent to get those nice groups to the left!

Steadman, I have been pulling my hair out trying to tune some lam birch arrows, I got them to fly good, tight groups, just left of where I,m looking. I called a friend that made the arrows, he suggested to start raising the brace height on the bow. It worked I got them in the bull, I had to go up 3/4 ", It was opposite of my way of thinking, Hope this helps. FERGI

Thanks for the advise. After all this, I found they are too weak spined. Thanks again, Steadman
