String pressure
« on: March 16, 2008, 09:26:00 PM »
I've been shooting quite a bit lately and my index finger of my drawing hand is getting sore.  I intentionally let some pressure off this finger and placed more on my other two (I shoot split).  This lead me to wonder.  Do most of you try to even out the string pressure amongst all three fingers? Favor one finger over the other? Pay any attention to it at all or just do what feels right?

It could be my imagination but it seems like it is helping my accuracy.  It's hard to tell because I have been shooting indoors at close range due to the weather.  Thanks for the input.

I think most of us split-finger guys most often have the other problem, building a calous on our third finger.

I attempt to place a little more presure on the index finger, but not over doing it.  In doing so, I get a more balanced draw.

If you index finger is sore, and is sore on the part where it touches your arrow nock, then you might have a high nocking point.  Maybe your shooting style causes it.

Are you shooting a tab?  If so, has it got a spacer, or leather to protect your finger?  Maybe you need to go to a thicker glover or tab.

I will be waiting to see what the other guys/gals have to say.  I will be watching this with a great deal of interest.

I shoot three under, mine don't get sore.
I use a tab made for three under also.

This posting thing is dufficult  :(   My finger gets sore near the contact area of the (where it would print)with the string.  Not by the nock area.  It is as if the tab were not protecting it during release as I have nearly a blister there.  I have been doing office type work for several years and am coming back to the sport from raising up crumb snatchers. (Maybe my hands have just softened too much) I have mostly used the black widow super leather tab during this period.  I tried my cavalier elite (I use for my FITA bow)and it seemed more comfortable as well as a cartel target tab my kids have discarded.  Even though these tabs are thinner they seem more comfortable.  I hesitate to go to three under because I routinely shoot longer yardages and find the lower anchor of the arrow helps me loft the arrow more.  Thanks

Scriv, I shoot split-finger with a tab.  I place 3 fingers on the string, all in the first joint with equal pressure on the string.  From there on, I don't think about the pressure points - just let things happen naturally. If I have any problem at all (happens once in a while), I'll have a sore middle finger after shooting a lot.  My diagnosis of this is that I'm drawing too much with my middle finger and not distributing the string across the my 3 fingers.
The work praises the man.

OK so it's 6 hours later and I have read what I wrote (sometimes it helps to talk to your self).  I began to experiment and even draw the bow out where I can see what's going on.  In a predraw position all looks well.  As I begin the draw I believe that my hand was rolling in such a way as to cause the tab to ride down and expose some tender flesh.  I actually cut the little guards off the wilson tab and that seemed to help me keep my finger down closer to the nock so the tab could do it's job.  Responses to my post prodded me to do some thinking (which I'm not very good at  ;)  ) And I believe the problem has been solved.  Now all I need to do is let my finger heal.  Thanks fellas.  :campfire:
