wood arrow help please
«

I am wanting to make some wood arrows. (first time) I shoot a 55#@29" Brack Quest and I draw a full 29 or 29.5". My shafts are usually about 30.5" and I am wanting to shoot a 190 gtain broadhead. I am looking for an arrow in the 600 to 750 gr range.
What type of wood would be best for heavy durable arrows. Keeping in mind that this is my first time and I am looking for wood that is user friendly. Also what spine shafts would i need to order? Would I notice a big difference between parallel and tapered shafts as far as flight is concerned?
Please help I am a little overwelmed.
Thanks, Jonathan

Good questions. Tapered arrows clear paradox more quickly and are a bit more accurate. Cedar will get you to 600 and a bit more, with that 190 broadhead. Ash, and Birch among others, will get you to 750. If you use a modern non stretch string probably 75-80# will do the trick. With Dacron 70-75. I would recommend you call or email Ted at Raptorarchery.com

Jonathan, another thing to bear in mind is broadhead clearance depending on the bow you shoot and how much of a center shot-if any-you have. I underestimated the requirement for my Martin Hatfield td/WW combination, and cut the arrows a little two short. Fortunately, I can use them in my Bickerstaffe longbow, for which, I have a shorter draw length.

I was going to suggest 75-80, too. If in doubt, go heavier; you can always leave them a bit long. As for which shafts, I'd recommend tapered hex pine from Whispering Wind, and let Bob help pick the spine. He will have the weight you want and you will get a dozen good shafts. The shaft is THE most important part of the arrow, don't go cheap there.
