Bare Shaft Questions
« on: May 12, 2008, 02:51:00 PM »
When I bare shaft the nock ends up 3 inches to the right of the point in the target.  Is this too heavy of a point or not enough?

Also when I compare my fletched arrows to the bare shafts the bare shafts are flat with no up or down but the fletch are pointing a little down.  Why is this and what do I do about it?

Thanks in advance everyone.

Check out the website of one of Trad Gang's sponsors, A & H Archery.  They have very good instructions on tuning, including bare shaft tuning.

They also have some very nice bows.

On a nock right for a right hand shooter it indicates too stiff an arrow. My GT's did the same thing. Added more weight up front and straightened them right out. More weight up front weakens the spine. As for the up and down, I would just adjust the nock point up or down until the fletched arrows fly perfect.

Bill,
While arrow attitude in the bale is important for some, there are times when you will get a false reading. This is due to the grain, density, and material used in bare shaft tuning.

The shooter should be directly in front of the butt, and the butt should be level with the shooter for best results.

However the most important factor is what the arrow is doing in flight.  Ken Beck says that there may be times, due to release, and other factors directly related to the shooter, that you might not get the perfect flight.

He suggest that you get the best flight you can, and he very seldom focused on what the arrow did after it hit the bale,  but how the arrows attitude was in flight.  That is where the attention to nock left, nock right, nock high, or nock low should be focused.

This is just my opinion, and I know there are others how do not share it.  If it helps great, if not, toss it in the trash.  Good shooting to you all!

Here is OL Adcock's web page on bow tuning and it includes bare shaft testing.  Very good info.

Do yourself a favor, and read it.  I its great stuff.  Up/Down is a nock point issue.  Then groups in relation to each other (bare/fletched) are the next step.  Angle to target face is not the issue to address.  Good luck.

Hey guys thanks for all of the help.

The good news is after reading all of the links and your advise I have come to the conclusion that I am very close to having a real nice set up.

I am just guessing because I haven't been back to tune again but it looks like I am going to end up with the following.

I shoot a 40 pound recurve @ 26 inches

I have Grizzly Stick Sitka's cut to 26 3/4 inch with three shield cut left helical 5 inch feathers.

I believe when it is all said and done I will have about a 225 grain tip not including brass insert that comes with the shafts.

Thanks again.
