125 yards??

A legal hunting bow in VA has to be able to shoot an arrow, with a BH, at least 125 yards.

It's not as easy to figure out as testing #age,  and since I'm fresh out of football fields...

Any idea what the minimum draw weight would be to clear 125 yards with a broadhead?

that's a wierd standard. My 43# longbow and I shoot it with 150gr BH would clear that no problem. Shot it down a corn field this year and was shocked at how far it went.

Even wierder is how the game warden would do a field test of your equipment in the field if he stopped you.

i shoot a 50# recurve and i actually tride this one day just for fun in extrem wind arrow with broadhead went 142 yards

Most states that use that kind of criteria use a minimum length and weight the arrow must be for that formula.Nv states it must send a 400 grn arrow of at least 24" long 150 yrds.

I tested a 40lber,useing a 470 grn arrow,and surpassed that mark by about 30 yrds,so it could very well be below 40 lbs.

Well my 57# longbow at my draw its more like 53-54#, will send a 491 grain carbon arrow over 200 yards with ease.

So I would think you could clear 125 yards with a 30# bow of good design.

Yep, A decent bow will easily shoot that. The WR is 230 yards at 11gpp with wood arrows, more then that with lighter arrows and carbon.   ....O.L.

I was going to mention that in my origional post.

I'd be nervous taking that test!

I'm using a 50# recurve,  but still..  I never shot it to see how far it could go.  Especially with BH.  

My ACE in the hole might be one of "the unmentionable" broadheads,  since they're legal in VA.

It is a very strange rule.  If I lose the arrow,  do they reimburse?  I'm comming to the painfull realization that "Archery Ain't Cheap"

That rule has been on the books in Virginia for at least 40 years.  I remember when I first started hunting with a bow as a teenager that was the rule.  I had a light Shakespeare Yukon marked 40- and at my 27 - 28 inch draw Dad wasn't sure it could do it.  We found a huge open school yard in Arlington one early Sunday morning and let it fly.  Not a problem!

Hmm. My grandson's 48" all wood bow at 18# at 22" sends a 10gr per pound arrow 146 yards. Wouldn't hunt with it though.
