Just blinded in dominant eye. Help!!!!!!
« on: December 25, 2008, 07:38:00 AM »
I have an autoimmune disease that drops my blood platelets to near zero. When it gets real low I bleed out of every orfice and hemorage internally. Yes I may not live much longer but until I die I want to shoot my bows well.
Problem is the drug they have been using caused my platelets to go too high, causing me to be very prone to heart attack, strokes and blood clots. This happened to me about a month ago and a clot lodged in my left eye blinding me right in the center of that eye, I am left eye dominant and left handed and used to be a very good shot.
Now my arrows go hard right and often entirely miss the target. Before I never conciously used a point on my bow, arrow,or hand to "aim" the arrow I just shot at a spot and hit it or got darn close. Now I have to conciously use my hand as an aiming device to get the arrows to fly to center.
I have also found that shooting out to 15yards I still punch the center out of the target rarely going over 2" in a 6 shot group if I  move it to  20yrds the group goes from 2" to approx 18".
I've tried switching to right hand but that isn't going to happen.
Any advice would be appreciated. Frank

thats a tuff one buddy im sorry to hear that!

for a proper fix i would try switch hands i know thats real tuff but might be the way to go. otherwise maybe try shorten you draw length and anchor further across your face that may work but awkward and look funny but if it works who cares.

you seem to shoot pretty good to 15 maybe just restrick your self to though shots and under

hope you can get it worked out.

Could you try to cant a little more and get your right eye over the arrow?

You could keep the same basic form and anchors, and keep both eyes open during the draw (probably have to squint real hard to MAKE the right eye take over) for depth perception...then add closing the left eye to your "rhythm".  This way you'd still be able to focus hard on your spot and have your eye over the arrow without having to COMPLETELY relearn to shoot right-handed.

May have to learn a way to cant to the same amount with some consistency though?

Whatever you do, keep pluggin' away at it.

I had cataract surgery and elected to get monovision, with my left eye for long vision and my right eye for short vision.  It's the opposite of what you would expect, since I am right-handed and right eye dominant, but I need good close vision for my work, and my right eye is my best eye.

When shooting the bow, I usually wear a contact lens in my right eye so I have good distance vision.  However, as I shoot daily at targets in my backyard, there are times when I am too lazy to put in the contact lens, which means that I am "aiming" (I shoot instinctively) with my left eye, since my uncorrected right eye vision is a blur beyond a few feet.

I find that I can shoot about as well that way as I can with my right eye corrected.  I know there are a number of shooters who shoot right-handed and are left-eye dominant, and don't even know it.  When they are tested, they are encouraged to change over to left-handed shooting.  Some successfully change over and their shooting improves, some don't.  The point is that if your form is consistent, your brain will adjust.  It is perhaps a bit more of an adjustment if your brain has to adjust when the arrow is not directly under your dominant eye, but is still something your brain is capable of doing.

Make sure that your eye is focused on the target, and not on the tip of the arrow or your hand.  Focusing on the tip of the arrow could lead to the type of errors you have experienced.

I think my brain has already corrected to right eye dominant, at least thats what my testing shows. I was trying to practice yesterday and half my arrows would go into a nice tight little group about 8" high and right and the other half would go into the bull also in a tight little group. Problem is I can't make them all go in the same place consistantly. I may be getting better though as before all of them went high right. I would change to right hand but my left shoulder won't handle the pressure of holding the bow at full draw. Thanks for the advice I'll keep trying. Frank

Robert,  Sorry to hear about your situation.  I think if you just keep focusing on the spot and shooting arrows your brain will figure it out.  I don't know how old your are, but your brain has many years of experience solving problems, many more difficult than getting arrows to a spot with one eye.  Trust your brain to tighten up those groups.  I'll say a prayer you remain well.

What about dropping in weight so right side will work? Once you have shot for awhile your shoulder may be up to old bows.

Sorry for your problem Robert. I`d like to suggest that you change to your right hand, but before you say no, hear me out.It only takes the sub-concious mind 30 to 60 days to ecept         this change over. You can look this up in any medical journa l. It may feel awkward at first but I know several guys who have changed over.I`m RT handed but have to shoot guns and bows LT handed,I lost my RT eye. Don`t put mental blocks ahead of your thinking. Just relax and in just a short time it will be as natural as shooting Lt. Best of luck! saddlesmith
