Odd Grizzly Stik wear *Pic

I've had some Sitkas for a couple weeks and have been shooting them at foam targets.  I've just noticed that all 6 of them have an acordian look to the first few inches of them.  It at least seems that the gloss is wearing off.  

Is this to be expected?  Is a stacked foam target like The Block or Black Hole too rough?

Has anyone with Grizzlys noticed this?

Is it just a look, or can you feel it with your thumbnail?

I have a few Sitkas, and the first few inches of the shiny finish is dull from shooting.

Not abnormal if its just the finish appearing dull. A lot of people knock that shine off them with steel wool so they dont glisten in the sun.

Not normal then. Skipped off a rock or something? maybe a point in your target?

It shouldnt be bumpy, so I'm not sure, are they all like this? and all the way around the shaft?

Yep all 6 are like this.  I've done nothing but shoot at foam targets and I haven't missed,  hit a rock, wall, or anything other than the targets.

I didn't notice this until I got a new target a few days ago.  A foam Black Hole   http://www.blackholetarget.com/   ,  but I'm can't be sure they weren't like that before the new target. The new target is deffinatly higher density,  but its still foam.  

The softer foam target worked well until I had to replace it.  I was just looking for a target that would last a while and not make a mess.


The Grizzlys sure weren't like this when I first got them a couple weeks ago.

I called Alaska Bowhunting and the two main guys are out at expos until the weekend.  The person on the phone said they'll talk to me about replacing them when they get back.

Nope, its not the target.

It could be the carbon fiber weave (raised bump) and the finish between them (low spot). You have shot them enough to wear the finish down, but the carbon weave is the strong point and doesn't wear as easily?

I found the same thing with my AD trad heavies. They have small bumps in the shafts like you described but in the back of the arrow where it starts to taper down to the Knock.hasnt effected the arrow flight, but it bugged me out after you spend all that money.

Yeah,  it's kind of got me bugged out.  These arrows aren't cheap.

There production has moved to China recently and have had some(serious) quality control issues. I think they have them worked it out, but I would keep an eye out. If I was buying any more Grizzly sticks I would defiantly watching out for straightness.

Seriously??  I thought they were made in Alaska!  That's disapointing to hear.

No they were originally made by a fishing rod company I think, I want to say shakespere. Then because of the availability of carbon here in the U.S. they went to China. This is what I was told by a pretty good source. But sources can be wrong.

Not clear...Are the grizzly sticks made in China or the ADs?

I got 6 grizzly sticks for Christmas. They are made in China. They shoot well but the slick gloss wears fast, even with soft bag targets.

They were being manufactured at the St. Croix Rod Co. Park Falls Wisconsin. About 40 miles from where I live.

I talked with the owner a little while ago about an order.
While doing so, I remembered this thread and mentioned it to him.
He is going to be waiting for your call.
He says that you will receive replacements if there is an issue and that the finish is not meant to be dulled.
This is a very stand up guy and I have been doing business with this company since the beginning.
While there have been some negative issues over the years, I have found that they have been corrected a.s.a.p. and I personally respect the Co.for that.

I am often surprised at the reaction from people to the imperfections or errors in manufacturing.
I have not seen a single manufacturer who hasn't had issues while bringing a product to market or in updating that product.
Some of the biggest names have carried the largest number of goofs and missteps and yet they remain among those at the top.
Larger companies always seem to have an excuse or excuse themselves from the issue by deeming errors to be a direct link to the user.

Meanwhile....a small company who has excelled and stands behind their product with replacement warranty....they get the heave ho?!.
Maybe I am way off base...maybe I am just having a bad day....but when I see such a dismissal based on one persons experience while the manufacturer offers no excuse and an offer to replace....I just cant believe what I am reading.
Am I reading this wrong?.
Maybe so....must be so...right?.
