3 under and bowhunting
« on: May 17, 2009, 03:52:00 PM »
I have always been a split finger shooter.  Last year I gave 3 under a try but didn't stay with it.  About two months ago I tried 3 under again.  I have come to the realization that I am a better shot 3-under.  Not that I was bad as a split-finger shooter, but shooting 3 under I have become a tack driver  The problem that I am having is when I shoot broadheads 3 under.  I suddenly become inconsistant(and yes my bow/arrow combo is tuned great).  I was just wondering if any of you have had this experience.  I believe it has something to do with the arrow tip I see in my peripheral vision.  I have been wanting to ask this for a while now and I know if anyone can help me, it is you guys.

Thanks,
Cade

Before you blame your concentration, which is what being distracted by peripheral vision boils down to, are you using two nock points on your string?  If not, your arrow may be sliding a little, so if you're not doing it now, try using two nocks points just a hair (and a very fine hair) further apart than the arrow nock is wide.

Dragon rider, I use two nock points served in set up just as you described.  I was just wondering if anyone else noticed any problems going from field points to broadheads shooting 3 under.  Thanks for your response....Cade.

Yes.  I have had that problem before.  I just take an arrow with a broadhead on it and shoot it for a few days.

It does "feel" different.  If you have gotten all of your arrow planing out with the bare shaft planing method of tuning then IMO you just need to shoot that broadhead arrow enough so that the broadhead is no longer a distraction.
You get to keep what you kill.  If it were easy there would be no value in it.

Sneaky, I know you said your bow is tuned perfectly, however is it tuned perfectly with broadheads? because they act differently than field points.

Just because they are the same weight as your field points does not mean they will shoot the same.

I align my broadheads horizontally, you might try vertical if your seeing it.

I have found if I want perfect broadhead flight, I must tune my bow for broadheads, not field points

Next weekend is the California state broadhead championship, I have been tuning my bow with broadheads the last few weeks and fine tuning it.

I got to defend my championship.

LOL

Please, I'm not bragging, I'm just letting you know, I know what I am speaking of, I hope this helps.

Thanks for all the help guys.  I put some broadheads on and did some shooting.  I found that I must have them mounted horizontal.  Vertical didn't work.  I now throw a broadhead mixed in with my field points and can shoot both without any problems.  I think it was just a matter of letting the ol' computer(brain) figure it out.  Thanks again, Cade.

Here is an idea from Denny Sturgis in Masters of the  Bare Bow III. Put a wrap of white electrical tape just behind the point on your arrow. It gives you a point of reference that you don't have with the broadhead compared to a field point. I haven't tried it yet, but it makes sense to me.

I looked at that on MBBIII and thought why not use White out or liquid paper.  If it wears just repaint.  It is gleaming white.  Tape might roll back after a few shots.

Just my 2 cents.

I tried the electrical tape and it didn't work for very long while practicing.  But for one shot on an animal, it would probably work.  I just went to practicing almost only with broadheads and it has seemed to work itself out.  Thanks for your input....Cade
