Question for the target guys.....

I'm a hunter, first and foremost.  But, I enjoy trad 3D, also.  I recently bought a new 'curve with 2 sets of limbs.  I have a lighter set (50#'s) that I will hunt turkeys with and shoot 3D.  I was/am having a time getting arrows tuned.  I have a combo that will work....but it's gonna make my overall weight +/- 575gr.-600gr..  I'm pulling 28-3/4", so the 50# limbs are (I'm assuming) really 52#'s (or so).

If you were looking for a target setup, would you think this was OK?  Or, might you look for an arrow that was a little lighter/faster?  I know it makes a diff. shooting a compound at unknown yardages, but does it with a trad bow?

I'd appreciate your input.

You can get use to anything but there is really no good reason to shoot heavy arrows for 3d.I try and keep 3d arrows at 9gns and under when I can.Less is even better.jmo

I've got one possible scenario that might work with a lighter arrow.  If it does work, it'll be about 8.7gpp.

Would that bother anything?

Also....the bow came to me with what appears to be some sort of plastic side plate.  If I change the side plate and happen to build it out a "little", could I then shoot a weaker spined arrow (theoretically)?

Nothing wrong with 8.7 for 3D or turkey.

Yes if you switch side plates with somthing that lets you build it out you can shoot weeker arrows.

I got up with a buddy today who knows his stuff.  I had no idea nock point could affect spine.  I learned something.

Thanks, guys.  I learn something every time I come here, it seems.  The lighter arrow was a no-go.  I'm gonna be shooting a 530gr. arrow (a tad over 10gpp).

They're flying like darts, though.  I'm happy.

i was once a 10 to 12gpp arrow guy...but the benefits of 7-8gpp " outweigh"    the heavier setup. but im also a gap shooter and i have cleanly taken game ( deer and hogs) with the lighter setup. shoot what your comfortable with and have fun.

Hey Jeff, missed you at some of the shoots, sure that we have passed many times.  I too am first and foremost a hunter, I just really like shooting foam also.  Gets into your blood, I guess! I am of the belief that you should shoot what is comfortable to you.  If it is comfortable for you to shoot your hunting setup at foam, then by all means do that.  I shoot a 65# Fox High Sierra recurve and over six hundred grain arrows at competitions.  Tried to shoot a lighter bow at foam but I just cant get the arrow to go where I want it to.  That is the only setup I shoot.  I have tried shooting lighter arrows but will consistently hit on the hot side.  I think that no matter your setup, if you are comfortable with it, the arrow will go where you want it to.  The key is to shoot that setup enough to know what you have to do at all yardages, JMO!  Good Luck!
