Anybody spit out the Welch koolaid yet?
« on: July 13, 2009, 02:09:00 AM »
well it's been about 4 months now and i'm still shooting 3 under from Welch influence. Anybody switched back from changing over in 09? i did miss 2 gobblers this year but it wasn't Rick's fault. To those that know me, know i have missed over 60 split finger!!!.......but i have tweated here and there on the welch style..Really two areas.

1. I simply just pull the arrow nock back to under my eye lid....no more cock feather on the nose or thumb touching the ear...just nock under my eye.

2. i made a trough in my arrow shelf so i can jerk the arrow back and snap shoot if i have too and the arrow doesn't swing off like it did on smooth shelf. missed a nice hawg exploding under my feet taught me this.

But all and all, i'm shooting the bow like a shotgun....it is so simple i can not stand it.
Aim down your arrow because thats where it's going.

Joebuck,

its been about the same amount of time for me.  I went back to anchoring at the corner of my mouth, still touching a feather to my nose.  I did this becuase I have better alinement and because my anchor was inconsistent by touching my ear.  I think I have added 10 to 15 yards to my effective range using his methods and three fingers under.

I anchor at the corner of my mouth and feather touching my nose.  when I attended Rick's school, he told me not to change my anchor to his method because everything aligned for me the way I was doing it.  After the school, I tried the thumb knuckle on the ear but my anchor is a little incosistent that way.  I remain a big fan of his shooting style.

I took the class in april (switched to 3 under about 5-6 weeks before the class)

Like TexasTrad said I anchor at the corner of my mouth and feather touching my nose. Rick had me try the "touch the ear" but said to keep anchoring at the corner of my mouth everything was working well. My shooting has greatly improved since the class.

I shoot primarily three flecth but it works with four fletch just as well.  The most important thing is to get the back of the fletch at the right spot on the arrow.  Rather than trying to measure where my nose hits the arrow, I just fletch an arrow with the feathers pretty close to the nock.  I then take a pair of scissors and cut the cock feather until my nose barely touches the fletch at full draw.   I then measure how far the back of the fletch is from the nock and fletch the rest of my arrows.

The reason i asked is, i shoot 3 under. I've been workin on shooting like Rick Welch does but i like to anchor with my index finger in the corner of my mouth and thumb around my jawbone. I do like the feather to the nose idea, it seems to help. I was tryin to get the feather on the nose, jawbone, and index finger in corner of my mouth but could'nt get the feather to touch with 3 fletch. So i just 4 fletched an arrow to see how it would work.  I fletched it 75x105 and it seems to line everything up perfect.  I shot it a few times off the porch but wont be able to tell for sure till in the morning. That makes a triple anchor and i can use all the help i can get.

I shot 3 under like Rick for about 3 weeks with good results. The only thing I didn't like was that my LB was much louder. moved nock and brace to try and quit her to no avail. Swiched back to split fingeer at the corner of my mouth and my bow is wisper quiet with arrows that are 10.66 gr. per lb. As long as my form is good the arrows still fly down the middle although a little high untill my brain gets use to split finger again.

My bow was louder when I switched to 3 under. Took the advice of a fellow tradganger and used silencers at 1/4 and 1/3 and its very quiet now. I dont mind giving up 2-3 fps for a quiet bow...PR

Our Longbow tourney rules only allow split finger and I sometimes shoot my Saluki 3 under in Fita 3D, I tried the feather touching the nose to see if it would work for me but just found it annoying and distracting.

Rickys system works very well for him, people are built different so it's not good for everybody, his basic form principles are very sound and nobody has come away from his school with a bad experience.

My bow also is louder with the three under!  Anybody know why?  I cannot figure it out, but it happens.

I shot Longbow in the Fita 3D world champs last month, the rules allow 3 under in Longbow division but noticed around half were shooting split finger and the top four Longbows all shot split finger. this might just be due to the IFAA being quite big in Europe and only allow split-finger so maybe Archers just kept with what they're used to BUT I find it interesting that no 3 under shooter finished in the top 4 or 5.

I can see how 3 under helps with easier aiming but I don't think anybody should write off split finger as it can be just as effective, both methods have their advantages and disadvantages and you should make you choice on whats best for you and not just because somebody else does it well.

The noise heard can be because your bow is not tillered for three finger under pressure on the lower limb. So your limbs are not returning in unison and under the same draw weight. ask your bowyer, he will probably tell you up front you may have trouble shooting three fingers under unless he tillered the bow from the start with that style.
