Arrows hitting to the right
« on: August 09, 2009, 11:13:00 PM »
Ok, having a bit of an issue lately. I have not shot in a while and have recently began trying to shoot regularly again. I am having an issue with all of my arrows hitting to the right, very frustrating. I have never had an issue like this before.

I am a right handed shooter, I shoot a Brackenbury Drifter off the shelf with 3 four inch parabolic fletching. I have tried shooting the cock feather in and out without any difference. At 15 yards all of my arrows are grouping about 6 inches to the right. I have bareshaft tuned the arrows (GT 55/75's, 29" BOP, 250 Grain up front with a total arrow weight of 575 Grains) and they are striking right with the fletched shafts... only problem is they are all hitting to the right! Vertically they are striking right on.

The only thing that I can think is that my form must be lacking somewhere. Any suggestions???

Thanks in advance.

Kevin.

Any change in the cant of your bow? That would be my first guess.

TRY BUILDING OUT YOUR PLATE A BIT AT A TIME. RICK WELCH'S VIDS HAVE THE PROCESS EXPLAINED FAR BETTER THAN I CAN.

You might be plucking.  On release, your drawing arm pivots at the elbow and your hand goes strait away from your face.  That can also be a sign that you are not using back tension and are using your arms to do all the work.  You need to take a video and let Terry and a few of the others look at your form.  Bill

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I am canting the bow the same as I always have. I will have to concentrate on my release and making sure that I am using back tension. I will make an effort to do this tomorrow with my practice and will let you know what happens.

Thanks again,

Kevin.

If you're getting tight groups, there's probably nothing wrong with your form.  Try Graybeard's advice before you start messing with your form.  He's also right about the Rick Welch videos - good explanation of to tune the bow so it shoots where you're looking.

I have not. I did not think that it would be an issue with Arrow spine as the bare shafts and fletched shafts are hitting in the same group.

If bare and fletched shafts are hitting the same spot it's not a spine issue.  Nor is it a release issue.  It's not easy to pluck the string consistently  :)

My vote goes to something simple:  where your eye is in relation to the arrow.  If your arrows are hitting to the right of where you feel you're aiming you could be tilting your head in more.  That would give you a sight picture of the arrow point slightly more to the left, which you would compensate for by aiming more right.

I have the reverse of this problem.  If I don't match my head angle with my cant angle my shots go to the left (I tend to not tilt my head enough).  A solid secondary anchor point helps.

Well I figured out my problem

For the last 6 months of so I have been having an issue with the string slapping my nose... kind of painful after an evening of shooting. I have been trying to concentrate on keeping my head facing the target to alleviate this issue, but in the back of my mind I keep thinking that it is still going to happen. What I was doing was either pulling my head slightly away from the string at the release of slightly pulling my string hand away from my face upon release.

While shooting tonight I really concentrated on keeping my head facing the target and having a smooth release while trying to reprogram my pea sized brain that the string was not going to hit my nose... I'll be darned if the arrows did not start striking where I actually wanted them to  :D

Thanks to everyone for their input and help!
