shooting off top of nocking point??

Seems i run into this time to time. My setup is shooting bareshafts deadon. Out in the field i see a little wiggle in my arrow. I put the arrow on top of the nocking point and it shoots great. If i raise the nocking point to that height (as on top) then it shows Bareshaft high, and my arrow kicks. I believe it has more to do with the pivot point on your hand as it does seem that it makes you heel more. Oh yes i shoot a longbow w/index grip and split finger. Any comments

Are you shooting a fletched and bare shaft on top of the nock or just a fletched shaft on top while in the field and then you move the nock to shoot the bare shaft when you are tuning?

I get something like this when my arrow wants to slide down my string on the shot.  I have never shot on top of my top nock to see what it does, but I have had an odd problem similar to this. Everything is great then all of a sudden I have wiggle in my arrows and something is wrong.  A nock point below the arrow and above fixes it.

Shooting bare shaft 9/16 over and it is hitting like a dart in neutral grained target (both fletched and unfletched hitting together). then when shooting a fletched shaft in the field i can see the wiggle . but when i set arrow on top of nock point and shoot ,it flies perfect. So i try moving nock point up some and the fletched shaft and bare shaft all shoot bad??

Jesse,

Howard Hill shot with one nock point and the nock set was under the nock of the arrow, with no nockset on top.  I find that my longbows shoot best with one nocking point under the nock.  Set that nock point under the nock where you are hitting the spot you want to hit at about 20 yrds and leave it.  There is nothing wrong with shooting split and one nock point under.  just make sure your nocks do not fit the string too loose!

maybe your fletching is hiitting the shelf.  Did you try rotating your arrow nocks a bit??

I prefer shooting off the top of my nock especially those D***** brass ones. I've went to the adjustable tie on nocks on most of my bows because they can be adjusted and it makes tuning much easier.

I nock my arrows above the nocking point, I greatly prefer this to the more common method of nocking the arrow below the nocking point.  Nocking the arrow from above using a trap method while hunting with a longbow and backquiver is like peanut butter and jelly, they go together well.

I always shot on top of the nocking point. When i first strted I bought the John Schultz video "Hitting em like Howard Hill" and that was what was suggested on the video and it has worked for me for close to twenty years.

There is a slow motion video on the net.  I think it's on the Beiter web page.

It shows the arrow actually sliding down the string a little during the power stroke.  It's not a lot, but it would sure make it difficult to tune or be accurate.

After I saw that, I changed to nock point under the arrow.

Why not use two nocking points, one above and one below. Seems like the answer to me.

I agree, if i bareshaft with a single nock with arrow on top, the arrow nock end just goes upwards as it flies down range - point end stays on target though - so the nock is definitely sliding up the string on release and fletching is definitely working to overcome this when i shoot fletched shafts.  I would presume the same with nocked under a single point.

Daddy Bear- Can you elaborate on what you mean by trap method?
I went out and tried shooting off the top of the string nock. My arrows flight was perfect every time, but the arrow wants to slid up the string every time , personally I don't like the idea of two nocks one above and one below. I'd much rather take care of the problem practicing a technique if there is one out there.

Sounds like you need somewhat tighter fitting nocks.

I AIN'T real smart about this..But Mark Horne told me to.." Put a BRASS nock above the arrow nock and then tie Dental floss @1/16 BELOW THE Arrow nock.. O.L. Adcock sez " It eliminates Flyer's".. Any-Any wiggle you get,(I think) is in your release..  :confused:
