Do I have a spine issue ??
« on: November 19, 2009, 10:15:00 PM »
First off I would like to say thanks ahead of time for any advice. I'm a compound shooter for 25 plus years and have become obsessed with the traditional aspect of archery. I'm shooting a 64" Tunica Longbow made by Mr. Floyd Oaks from Louisiana. It's 56lbs @ 28".  I was shooting 28.5" 2018 Easton Legacys with 5" Gateway feathers with 125 grain points. I had good arrow flight and have been shooting this setup since back in the spring. I installed some 125 grain Magnus Stingers 2 blade and am hitting about 6" consistantly left when shooting the broadheads. I shoot 3 finger under and anchor in the corner of my mouth.
Do you think it's form or possibly spine problems.

Thanks, Pistol

Yes, I think you have a spine problem...too much.  Try a 250g head or a 2016 and I think you will have better results.

Thanks guys. This traditional stuff is blowing my mind. I'm confident in my ability to setup and shoot a compound setup, but I'm reading and trying to learn as much as I can about the traditional stuff.
Sounds like I'm getting new arrows for Xmas.

Thanks

Have you tried shooting a bare shaft??? You learn a lot about your arrow flight an how much your feathers are actually working too keep your arrow straight. When you shoot a bare shaft an it goes into the target nock right ya have got too much spine an how ya break the spine down is by adding weight. An you know everything is right when the shaft is sticking out strait out from the target.
Being that the 125 grain is giving you problems work with weights above that an see what gets a job done.
Make sure you have got plenty of room for era where ever you shoot. Good luck

Like the others, Pistol, I'm gonna guess that your 2018's are a bit stiff for your bow.  Field points are rather forgiving of tuning compared to broadheads.  Couple of things you can try just to confirm this: 1) find a couple of heavier points and try them out.  You should see some improvement if spine is the issue.  2) Shoot what you have through paper from about 6 feet, both field points and broadheads.  The tear in the paper will show you how the arrow is coming off the bow.  Assuming a right hand shooter, if the point is to the left of the fletching the arrow is too stiff.  Newspaper works great; set it far enough in front of the backstop/target so that the arrow clears the paper before hitting the target.  A vertical tear is usually a nock point issue and an angle tear is some of both.

You can also swap broadheads around or clock the inserts so the blades are horizontal.  This can reduce the initial planing and bring the broadheads back into the group.  You haven't really fixed anything, it's just another indication that there is a spine issue.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Im also newer to trad archery and have noticed the same thing (nocks consistently to the right of head). I draw just over 30" and shoot a 31" arrow @ 59# shooting 125 gr heads with no insert. My question is why when shooting trad bows do guys need so much weight up front? (150 gr head 100 gr insert ect) I drew 65# with my compound and shot 125 gr and a lot of my friends shot 100 gr heads.
 thanks for any advice.
