Quinn...expansion doesn't need to actually move the string rearward in any large amount but to keep rearward tension on the string during the release phase... a fraction of an inch is plenty.....try this at anchor( hate that phrase) simply use back tension to move the draw side elbow to the left ( RH shooter) that's the trick..expansion is not a rearward movement, only a movement of the elbow via back tension....let the subconscious decide when its gonna stop holding the string, while your aiming and expanding!

I like the tip. I have always tried to do this as part of reaching back tension, the shoot is pulled through and just with go off natural. Thats how I can best descibe it. It helps my shoot excution and follow through alot.  When I can do this I shoot much better, and always have my best arrow flight too.

I read this tip from Terry and the first two groups I shot from 25 yards, either the arrows were touching or the fletching was. I've tryed this several times sence and can't seem to get it right. I've changed somthing but I can't figure out what. This method really does work but I need to figure out what I was doing in the beginning! HELP! Jason

Jason, one of the things I have found so satisfying (frustrating) about trad shooting is the almost infinite number of times I "have it all figured out".  Then I go out the next day to shoot "exactly the way I did yesterday" and somehow something is different. Presumably that is what blank bale is supposed to do - groove in the shot.  The trouble I have found with that is that all it takes is one small thing (that I may not even be aware of while blank bale shooting) and it throws me off 6 inches at 20 yards.  I seem to need the feedback of seeing where my arrow is going (missing?) to keep my form correct.  When it is going well I don't even have to really focus on any part of it, but when it isn't, I focus on all parts and still have difficulty putting it all together.  The thing I have done recently that seems to help the most is establishing a shot sequence (mental checklist) with each shot.  I still do the blank bale and the formaster and everything else everyone talks about for back tension, etc., but some days it is still not as consistent as I would like. I have found it to be true that focus on a spot on the target is very important, too, but if my form is flawed I can focus on a spot until hell freezes over and I still won't hit it.  Incidentally, I like your Frost quote, but I like to add a couple of words from Forrest Gump - "S#!t happens, life goes on".
And in the end of our exploring we shall return to the place where we started and know that place for the first time.

Observation : We should be comfortable with the draw weight of our bows, I believe this..but just how comfortable?

This is a very very good tip (that being the overworked exhausted complacent good shot I am),  :saywhat: , do all too infrequently.

My long winded observation is that when shooting a bow that is just a little too heavy, say 5lb my release is lovely, yes because I AM usually still pulling through..not to say I am releasing early. Anyone else experience this.

Great advice, would like to add that when pulling the arrow back, imagine a straight line to the target - pull the arrow along that same straight line then let the mind work on the elevation.
