R/L handed for a 4 yr old ?
« on: February 01, 2010, 11:02:00 AM »
I am planing on building a bow for my son. He will be 4 in March. I am right handed and left eye dom. I think he is going to be right handed. Dose it matter at all how he starts out? Would it be easy to switch him if he truns out to be crossed like I am? When would he be old enough to find out eye dom?

Thanks for all yalls help

If it were me, I would not be concerned with eye dominance. If you believe that he is right handed, I would proceed with the right handed bow.

Now I would try to have him determine if he has a dominant eye yet (which he probably does). Then build th bow to match the eye dominance.  It will be easier to learn to shoot left handed if he is cross dominant than change later in my opinion.  Having been trained in the NASP program they really emphasize the eye dominance, because it helps the student become more consistent, and feel successful quicker. I realize at four he is not going to be super serious and the point is to have fun.  But I think if he starts building form and muscle memory with the side that matches his eye dominance he will improve quicker as he ages and starts to work to be more successful.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

Hand him a bow and see which hand he naturally uses and go with that. Just my opinion.

Put an empty paper towel roll on the table and tell him to look through it.
He will look through it with his dominant eye.
My seven year old daughter is now right eye dominant, she started out left eye dominant and has switched.  I will keep her shooting left handed for a few more years to see if it changes back.
Kids these days, I tell you.
