Decent drill?
« on: February 15, 2010, 02:35:00 PM »
Since I've made the switch to trad. archery I've quickly come to the realization that I just don't have enough time to practice.  I promise to work on the blind bale as much as I can, but I understand that I need more.  I made myself a formaster this weekend and have been tinkering a little in the office today.  I've got a couple of Jumpstretch bands here that I use for some stretching and increasing workout volume.

I took one of the lighter bands and hooked my formaster to it.  Now I just grab the band and practice my set up, draw, and release.  Will this do me any good, or will I somehow hamper my gains with this?

yep it's good.

You dont need anything really, just close your eyes and visualize the shot sequence and feeling, it can be a very powerful aid to training and pre shot sequence during a tourney.

They say shooting a Bow is 80% mental, at least once you have a decent shot sequence to work with.

I read in a Sports Psychology book where they did an experiment and taught two groups how to shoot basketball hoops, one group practiced all week and the other group just visualized the sequence in their head, the group that practiced all week lost to the visualization group on a competition at the end of the week.

Whump Sez: Try to find a bow, that fits you and your shooting and hunting style. I set up for  close shots in thick cover, therefore I adopted an anchor that fits me which is at the corner of my eye. I can use the point of the arrow for reference and that makes it a lot easier to get on target without hours of practice each day. I use the visualization techniques that "Zetabow"  is talking about. I play the shot out in my mind as the animal approaches, point my bow arm toward the point of impact, concentrate on the spot , draw and shoot. Playing the shot out ahead of time in your mind is almost like getting two chances at the shot. I took 4 shots this past season and took 3 deer---"I had my mind on something else when I missed [grin]" So my advice is try different anchors and shooting styles before you settle on one that may only make things hard for you. After you have established good form in shooting the bow try the visualization and you will be surprised how it will help. Hunt safe
