Target panic or something else?
« on: March 23, 2010, 04:33:00 PM »
HI! I really need your help with this one.

my issue is about my anchor point/full draw.
i can draw my bow back, anchor it NICELY and hold it several seconds with out any waves or so...But, when i draw against the target, and i know that im gonna shoot now, i cant get even at full draw. Its like my brains know my intentions upfront!

does this sound like target panic or what is this? i have been shooting four years now, and its haunting me Still! how can i repair this?

i would be really grateful if you fellas give me keys to the answer!

Due to the maker of my first bow telling me that the wood was 9/10 broken at full draw and not to hold it too long I had an issue like that when I first started archery.
I tried hypnosis for it and immediately developed a rock solid anchor and a smooth release.

Yep, that's target panic. Same as the yips in golf. Unexplainable but deadly to your confidence.

What's your setup, draw length, peak weight, bow length, shoot options as in glove, etc?

One thing that I was told about by a PAA pro years ago and read again lately that has worked  for me and more recently one of our group goes as follows. Draw the bow back with your eyes closed-let down. draw with the eye over your arrow closed-let down, draw with the arrow eye closed anchor and then close that off eye and open the eye over the arrow-let down. Do this a few times to get comfortable with it. then draw with arrow eye closed, open it and close the other, then open the other hold a bit then let down. When you get comfortable with that, draw with the arrow eye closed, open it and close the other, then open both tighten and release.
I started flinching again awhile back it took me about 15 minutes to get rid of the flinch.

Best advise I ever got was "Talk to Jay Kidwell", I think he's J-Kid on here. Get his book Instinctive Archery Insights, there's a whole chapter dedicated to understanding and beating T.P. The problem is 100% mental and he gave me exercises to do through e-mails that made a huge difference in just a few sessions.
Give it a try, you won't regret it.

I tried that drawchecker yesterday, and it was great! i tune it to crick when im at full draw but i must stretch my shoulders at the correct line. it works very well!
