3d shoot scores?

Ok folks I understand that this is kinda a personal prefrence thing that might very from person to person. What kinda scores are considered to be good scores with trad equipment say on 30 or 40 target course. ibo scored 11,10,8,5. I shot a wheelie bow(past tense) for a long time but with trad equipment I dont know what goals to set except to improve.

You're gonna get a ton of good info, here's how I do it.
1- I'm only in competiton w/ myself & trying to beat my last score.

2- goal #1- Don't miss a single target. once I've achieved that goal I can progress to goal #2.

Goal # 2- Don't shoot ANY 5's, only 8 or better. When I achieve this goal, then I can progress to goal #3.

Goal #3- Don't shoot any 8's, only 10 or better.

You ask about a score, you may want to consider your average points per target. When you get above an average of 8 pts/target you will probably start winning your local stuff. Hope this helps, & kepp us posted on your progress.- Dave Mullins.

if you average an 8 your going to be in the top of bracket... if you mix in a few more ten or 12s you have a winner....thats what i have seen anyway

sputter- This year at the national level scores have been pretty good(recurve classes). Scores will vary tournament to tournament. So far this year the IBO has had one national tournament that was won with a 374. The ASA has had four national tournament with an average winning score of 363(highest winning score 382 and lowest winning score 342). As Nightowl suggested a score of all eights (320) would have placed you in the top 10 at most of the shoots this year.At last year's IBO Trad World a 320 would have placed you 23rd in recurve class. To give you an idea a 360 is 20-8's and 20-10's and a 380 is 10-8's and 30-10's.

Waiting4fall had some good goals. Just remember that they are always just goals. #1 beat your last score. That sometimes is not possible because of the difference is courses. If you shot an easy course then a real tough one it would be hard to better your last score. #2 Not to miss a target. This is a great goal that even the best shooters don't make. Dave even Rick has missed one from time to time. The thing is not to let a miss ruin your day. If you have a tournament that you have no misses and no fives you have had a great day(even if you don't win). #3 no eights is a goal that will be out of reach for most all of us. However having a goal like that can either make us give up from failure or drive us to great heights. Remember when setting goals we need to have some we can achieve, some that take hard work to achieve and some that are just out of our reach.

Some really good advice up there, all of which I agree with. It does depend on whether you shoot recurve with carbon or longbow with wood because that has a bearing on it as well. I shoot longbow with wood arrows but I always look at my average per target score because all courses are different so an overall score can sometimes be misleading. Set a goal of 8 and go on from there.

The last 3D tourney I shot in, I felt pretty good about day one of a two day event. There were 20+ adult trad men keeping score. There were 50 targets and I rated the difficulty level at a tad over medium. My goal was to average all eights, which would have given me a 400, and have no zeros. I shot a 390 and had just one miss. I was fairly satisfied. At the end of the day, I was in third place. After finding out the leader's score of 487(or maybe 478, I forget which), I decided not to shoot the second day(it was also raining most of the second day anyway). This was my first 3D shoot this year. I bested my score last year at the same event (which was also my last 3D shoot) where I shot a 328 for 50 targets.

I'm not a great shot, but I can hold my own with most trad shooters. You get out of it what you put into it. If you want to win tournaments, you have to put some work into it. I like to win, but winning isn't at the very top of my list at the shoots. If I can come away with a decent score and not lose any arrows, I feel very good at the end of the day. The main thing is, I always have a great time shooting with other trad shooters. I find it very satisfying and relaxing. We as trad shooters/hunters are definitely a different breed of archers, especially when compared to the wheelie people!

What kind of yardages are you guy's shooting at these 3D shoots???
Around here there are very few traditional shoots, so we shoot in 3D compound tournaments & the yardages are between 20 & 50 yards, that's quite a test for myself with only 3 months experience. I would be elated to not miss a target!!!

Where I shoot, deer size targets are averaging right around 20-25 yards with the smaller targets averaging about 17-18 yards. The elk size targets will go about 35 yards average. These distances are from the trad stakes. If you're shooting at 3D shoots set up for wheelie bows, you need to be shooting from the youth or cub stakes.

Thanks for all the great opinions. Im starting to get the idea of what I should consider a reasonable goal. I have friend/ mentor who seems to always be 40 to 50 points ahead of me. My goal was to keep up with him. But I think I have been puting to much presure on myself by trying to nip at his hills. I rekin I will tangle with myself on the next course. The average of all 8's seems to be a pretty realistic goal and by doing that i would most likly be in the top of the score brackets. (SWEET I LIKE THAT ONE).

Well, if you are not having fun doing it, it is not worth your time.  Everyone down deep would like to win the 3-D's, but if you put so much pressure on yourself to win, its bad.  I developed a bad case of target panic because I was trying my best to win.  Now I just want to have control of the bow an have a good time.  Remember , everyone cannot be a IBO World Class Shooter. I just do not have that much talent!

i am still a believer that there is a difference between a target shooter and a bowhunter..sputter shoot your next course on a knee..wait im coming down this weekend ill do it with you itll be something different...ill shoot half of it on my belly just something different

For the past year I've started to concentrate more on my shooting 3D with friends and that has increased more scores by a lot. My goal is to not miss a target and it average an 8. I wentthrough our winter league without missing a target and I was thrilled. I came in second overall. To me this is practice for hunting so if I'm shooting 8's I'm very happy.

In my case scores do not help me improve ,they add stress to do better. About a month ago I read either here or the other site about a guy that uses the KWM method to score 3D. With K=kill,W=wound,M=miss. I use this scoring whether its at a shoot or in my yard and have improved. I no longer chase numbers and worry about averages. Last shoot I had 19 K,3 W,3 M from 9-35 yds, uphill and down. I want all K's!!
