Stances: Longbow vs Recurve
« on: June 20, 2010, 07:22:00 AM »
So, I am a relative newbie and don't have access to a local club or expert so pretty much on my own.  I have Masters of the longbow I and Cameron's book on instinctive shooting.  I noticed that I can get 8/12 in the sweet spot of a 3-D deer target at 15 yds if I shoot my longbow using a recurve like stance like a recurve vs a true trad stance (tilted head/bow etc.)  I have corrected most of my flaws (plucking the string was worst) and tuned the bow so the arrow flight is real sweet and quiet.  Any pointers on the difference between the trad recurve stance vs longbow and why I can't hit squat (4/12) with the longbow stance?  Maybe I should go to a recurve?  Any advice would be great!

thx

I'm not 100% sure what you mean by "longbow" stance. I've seen people get into about every position possible to shoot. The bottom line is to you whatever stance enables you to hit what you are looking at most consistently. Having said this here is a reason for standing different.

Recurves are centershot so you can stand erect and get good alignment for shooting. The most erect and properly aligned are generally the olympic shooter and field archers. Before the modern longbows became popular most longbows were not centershot. Almost all selfbows are not centershot. When the bow is not centershot the arrow has to bend around the bow and  go through archer's paradox. Unless you are shooting a very heavy bow it's hard to find weak enough spined arrows to get tuned so most folks tend to hit left. So what they do is cant the bow. They are essentially changing the plane in which archer's paradox takes place - making it more vertical vs. horizontal.

They also tend to bend at the waist. The bottom line is that no one will say, "you're not using the right stance" when you shoot the 12 ring on a target. It simply doesn't matter, BUT I will tell you that the most important thing is to use a stance that is easy for you to replicate time and time again. When people change their stance many of them don't realize that they often change their draw length. If they open up they tend to short draw thus causing the arrow to shoot low.  This is what gives them problems on the 3d range when their foot is on the stake and they are forced to alter the stance.

Good luck in choosing what works best for you. Happy shooting.

Many and varied are the stances required in the bush. It matters not for which type of tradbow.

That's the great thing about trad archery. It's different for everybody! Do what works for you and stick with it. Good luck!

I agree with Ben and Rob.I hunt a lot and seldom run into that "perfect" situation. If you wait for everything to line up perfectly you will not get a bunch of big game shots where I hunt. Being very adaptable in your shooting positions from your knees and from behind trees will get you game most folks have to watch go by down here.RC

Having your shoulder aligned with the target is the most important and I believe being kinda "relaxed" helps as well.RC

I concur with you guys, but I do believe that if you learn to shoot with good form then you are departing from a known point when you have to alter the stance in the woods.

Thx all for your replies, I guess I was trying to determine why my change in form (from olympic style to more relaxed trad style) created such differences.

I'm with Ben and others. I am yet to come into a hunting situation that I have time, space etc to form a so called "proper" stance. I find it far more important to have a consistant anchor, bow arm and release.

Form is from the waist up......proper alignment is proper alignment.......and proper alignment can be vertical or horizontal.

Proper alignment/Form doesn't care if the bow has curved limbs or not.....or is center shot or no shelf.

Biggest difference seems to be in the grip.....very low grip with longbow and higher grip with recurve.

I found that the most important thing is the bow arm stays rock solid until the arrow hits mark.
GOOD LUCK
