Shooting improvement!
« on: July 15, 2010, 12:30:00 PM »
I usually just grab the string and pull it back, anchor index finger to corner of mouth (I shoot 3 under), tip of fletching touch nose, and let it fly.  I started thinking of how my hand was in reference to the string. The back of my hand was not on the same angle as the string...string torque!  So, I started extending my draw further like Rod had taught me. I got away from this and that was another problem. I found my hand was flat to my face, anchor thumb joint in back of jawbone and the string hand was tilted to the same angle as the string.  It was just like everything fell into place! With just a little more back extension and the arrow is in flight heading pretty much where I look. Oh, I'm not the best shot out there. But everytime I pull the string back there's a confidence that the arrow has the possibility of hitting it's mark. Just thought I'd mention this in hopes it may help someone else.

Now onto the next thing and more practice.

That's the same progression I went through, David.  First I learned how to use back tension to draw the bow, from Rod, and then I learned how to relax my hand so that the back of my hand stayed at the same angle as the string.  The combination of those two things has solved 90% of all the problems I had with accuracy.  Now, I guess if I REALLY want to become a good shooter, I have to do something about the other 10%....

It is funny to me that I had forgotten what Rod had told me. It is so easy to fall back into old ways I guess. But upward and onward!
Good shooting guys!

What do you guys mean by the back of the hand the same angle as the string?

Let's see if I can explain this....if you invision your hand as a flat surface, the idea is to try and keep that angle of the hand in line with the string. If you don't you are twisting the string in an unnatural way that will add string ascillation which is not good.

To take it one step further, I don't "try" to keep my hand at any angle.  What I try to do is to keep my hand relaxed, except for the hook in my fingers.  If my hand is relaxed, I can feel my hand stretch out as I draw the bow, and the back of my hand will automatically be in line with the string.  If I try to pull with the muscles in my hand, the back of my hand will not be flat, it will be cupped, and the chances are my fingers will torque the string (put sideways pressure on the string).

Thanks for the tip.  I know I must not be doing it, as I get a huge callus on my ring finger on my right hand.  So I must be torquing it, and cupping my hand.  I'm gonna try it this morning.  Thanks again.

I always learn from and enjoy reading your posts Dave, thanks Snag and Dave for trying to share info with all of us.  Even though I don't always post replies, I read them all and have evolved my shooting greatly thanks to all the comments and videos in this forum!

Keep it up.
