Arrow finish
« on: January 27, 2007, 04:14:00 PM »
I just got back from the hardware store. They are saying if you use an oil-based stain (Minwax) then use an oil-based enamel and top coat with an oil-based spar urethane....oil-based with oil-based....water-based with water-based. I have seen where some of guys like to mix the two. Like a oil-base stain, then a coat of water-based poly, then crown with oil-based enamel, crest w/ testors, and final top coats w/ water-based poly. They are saying in this scenario use oil-based all the way through. What do you think?

I have Minwaxed Oil Stained ALL of My Arrows, Spray Paint/Crown Dip, Testors Cresting, sometimes some Funky Pink Latex for a Lady. I let Everything Dry OverNight between Steps as well.
Then Dip them in Minwax Water-Based Sealant at Least 2 Times, letting them Drip Dry OverNight between Coats, Just to be Safe. When Everything Has Dried Very Well, I put a Coat of Good Old Turtle Wax on them, and they are Slicker that CatCrap on Linoleum!!
I cant say I have ever had a Problem with them, and I havent heard any Bad Mouthing from the Folks that I have sent them to either!!
That is what works Well for Me.

Why the water-based as sealant? Is it just because it cleans up better, because it smells less, all of the above? I just want compatability and long wear. What do you use for the crown dip?
