nocking point?
« on: September 14, 2010, 03:12:00 PM »
Hi all,

I am setting up my new bow and was wondering if 7/8 above center is a good starting point for placing my nocking point.

Correct me if I am wrong, but that measurement is taken from the very bottom line on the bow square, rather than taken from the dead center line of the bow square?

Sorry for the dumb question, but I always thought the measurement was taken from the dead center line of the bow square.

A few additional pertinent points: I am shooting three finger under and I obviously shoot nock above. My arrow is three fletched shield feathers.
The bow is a longbow and the brace height is set at 6 7/8, the bowyers recommendation for the brace.

Thanks in advance for your advice,

Dennis

There should be a line on the bow square that would meet the bottom edge of the bow square if it were extended (the edge that touches the rest).  That is the line you want to measure from, and is usually the bottom line.

For shooting 3 under, you want a nock above the arrow, and many of us also put a nock under the arrow.  But the bottom of the nock above the arrow is what you're measuring to.

I have 8 bows that I have tuned to shoot 3 under, and the nock points on all of them are in the range of 5/8 - 3/4, so for me, 7/8 would be a little high.  It's not going to hurt anything to shoot with a nock point that is a little high (better than a nock point that is too low), but 7/8 may be a little higher than you need.

I find out where to put my nock point by shooting a bare shaft, and put the nock point where I get level, or slightly nock high, arrow flight.

I shoot 3 fingers under and always start at the 5/8 mark above center and it most often stays there. I put a crimp on nock point at this location and then tie a dental floss point down under my nock. With properly tuned arrows and the right brace heighth this seems to work well for me.

how far do you put the dental floss under your arrow? Do you make it tight or just a little gap between the nock and floss?  thanks brad

Hi Brad
I nock my arrow under the crimp on and then tie on a dental floss nock point directly under the nock. Not too snug but just enough to keep the nock of the arrow from sliding down.

Great tip, Larry. Very similar to McDave. I think I will start at 5/8. I also use serving material to tie below my nock, below the arrow nock. It works great. Thanks again.
