Critique me.......video!
« on: June 22, 2011, 09:52:00 PM »
All right guys.......let me have it. The Good, The Bad and The Ugly, LOL!  Keep in mind that I am as green as can be.

By the way, it is nothing like a video to show your "ticks".  Check out my mouth when I release the arrow!   check out video

Jeff,  Have you been following the other posts about shooting?  There are several going right now that might give you some tips and video/photo references to look at.

If you are just starting out, you are not doing too bad but here are a couple things to look at.

Look at your bow hand.  See how your fingers are sticking straight out?  Let them relax and curl naturally to the back of the grip.  That way you don't have to "catch" the bow when you release.  Reduce all movement to just that required.  Otherwise, your bow grip looks pretty good.

Second, watch your head as you draw.  As you pull back, you lower your head to meet the string and your hand.  Hold your head still and pull to your face.  Don't go to meet it.

Finally,  As you start to draw think "rotate my elbow around my spine."  You are only using your shoulder and arm muscles to draw and that is causing your string hand to fly out from your face on release rather than move straight back along your jaw bone to the back of your neck.

Again, if you are just starting, not too bad.  One other tip would be to NOT shoot to hit a bull's eye or any other target.  Set your "arrow catcher" up at shoulder level and shoot at really close distance (5-10 feet).  This is to let you get the feel of the shot without the distraction of trying to hit something.

Keep taking video for your own review and then post one every once in a while and we'll keep you on track.

There's are few things I see that you have to work on.. As moebow has mentioned..
First.. You're driving your head forward to meet up with the string.
You'll gain an 1" or so in draw length if you bring the string into your face. And you'll get more of your back muscles
involved in the equation .
Second.. Your anchor point looks like it's floating. It's much easier to get a consistent anchor if you can feel contact
some where on your face.. Like one of your fingers in your corner of your mouth or thumb against your cheek. Or a combination of both.

The fingers on the grip come from years and years of shooting a compound.  Habit is going to be tough to break!

I noticed the head movement as soon as I watched the video the first time.

I have read and read and read about using the back to draw instead of the shoulder and arm.  I was focusing on so many things today that never crossed my mind and it is something I concentrated on the last few days.

I call myself using my middle finger to the corner of my mouth as my anchor.  Video tells the story though.  Thanks guys.

And for what it's worth,  the C bow should not be shot with fingers sticking straight out either.  You hold a lot of tension in your bow forearm by doing that and it is not required or desirable. fwiw

You came to the right place for some great advice, and I can't give any better.  All I'll say is to try to be as consistent as possible, and shoot ALOT.  Just like a golfers swing, it doesn't groove in overnight.  And welcome to the gang.

I would add coming from shooting a compound bow with fingers before switching that I don't like to use the corner of the mouth since the skin can move around so much. I actually use my thumb joint under my jawbone or a friend uses his fingertip on a tooth as anchor point.

BODY POSITION :  Here's a diagram of what some mentioned....I think you are robbing yourself of performance by not getting full extension.

Not this.....
